FSSAI stands for ‘Food Safety and Standards Authority of India’. It is an independent organization under the authority of the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India. The FSSAI has been established in 2008, under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 which is a consolidating statute regarding food safety and regulations in India. FSSAI is responsible for protecting and supporting public health through the regulation and management of food safety and quality.

The FSSAI is headquartered at New Delhi. The authority also has 6 regional offices located in the cities of Delhi, Guwahati, Mumbai, Kolkata, Kochi, and Chennai.

An FSSAI license is mandatory for all businessmen before starting any food business. All manufacturers, traders and restaurants who are involved in the food business must obtain a 14-digit registration or a license number which must be printed on all food packages manufactured by them.

This step has been taken by the Government to ensure that food products undergo certain quality checks before reaching consumers, thereby reducing the instances of adulteration, sub-standard products and to improve accountability of manufacturers by issuing a food service license to them.
