You can submit an application for driving licence renewal online to the RTO as per your present address. Also, you may need to visit RTO where it is necessary. Renewal of driving licence

The renewal of driving licence can be done prior its expiry or after expiry. You can apply for driving licence renewal through Parivahan official portal of government. The process for renewal is not completely online for all states. The states which provide contactless services for driving licence renewal have online process throughout. Otherwise you have to visit RTO after online form submission. After completing the process, you will receive you driving licence in 25-30 days.

  1. Visit to the parivahan website
  2. Fill applicant details
  3. Upload documents, photograph and signature
  4. Payment of fees
  5. Verify payment status and print receipt
  6. Driving licence appointment for RTO (where needs to visit RTO)
  7. Visit RTO with all documents and online filled application form
  8. Get your renewed driving license at your present address by post or you may have to collect it from respective RTO depending upon service available

Address change while driving licence renewal

If your address has been changed, you can change it on your driving licence while renewal. While applying online for the renewal of driving licence, you can choose the change address in DL option and pay the respective fees to get a new driving licence with an updated address. There are few cases related to address, which you can choose while applying:

  1. Address is same: if your existing licence address is same as present address, apply at same RTO.
  2. Change in address
    1. Within city: Apply at same RTO and add present address
    2. Different city: if the different city comes under different RTO, you have to apply at respective RTO with changed present address.
    3. To other state: You have to apply respective state and the RTO with existing driving license details and change address to the new present address.

Backlog process for driving licence renewal

You can renew driving licence online through parivahan website. For applying  online for DL renewal, you need to have your licence details in the digitalized data of parivahan . If you have an old or paper driving licence, you may not find your details in digital data. You can still check your existing licence details on the parivahan website. You have to enter your current driving licence number and date of birth to check it. After entering all details,if you do not find your data in the central repository system of parivahan , you should apply for backlog entry.

For the backlog entry process, you need to visit the parent RTO for which you hold an existing driving licence. After this backlog entry process, you can apply online for a renewal of driving licence.

How much time you have for driving licence renewal ?

  1. You can renew driving license within one year before its validity expires.
  2. After expiry, there is a 30-day grace period for renewal, for which you don’t have to pay a late fine.
  3. If you renew after the grace period, there will be a late fine of 1000 Rs per annum for the renewal of driving licence
  4. After one year of expiry, you need to take a driving re-test for renewal.
  5. You can not apply for renewal after 5 years of license expiry. It needs to apply for new driving licence after 5 years.

Documents required for DL renewal

As we know, for the renewal of driving licence, a visit to the RTO varies according to the location. For a completely online process for DL renewal, you have to upload documents in softcopy (pdf or jpg). If you have to visit RTO following the online application for DL renewal, you need to take the documents as well while visiting RTO.

Documents required to renew driving licence:

  • Original expired driving license.
  • 3 passport-size photographs and signature in digital form
  • Present proof of address
  • Medical certificate- Form 1A filled  signed by a certified medical practitioner MBBS  (If you are above the age of 40 years)

List of acceptable documents for proof of address 

  1. Passport
  2. Voter Id
  3. Aadhar card with DOB
  4. Employment certificate

Specifications for uploading photographs and signature

  1. Photo should be minimum 35 mm×45 mm  i.e 420×525 pixels
  2. Signature should be minimum 35 mm×11mm  i.e 256×64 pixels
  3. File size should be between 10-20 Kb in jpg/jpeg format

How to renew driving licence online?

Now for applying for renewal of driving licence through Parivahan , you can follow the online steps:

  • After clicking that link a page will open, select your state, now click on “apply online” then select “service on driving license”.

  • On the next page, you will find a set of instructions, read those click on continue.
  • Now you have to enter your driving license details, date of birth, etc. after filling those click on “proceed”.
  • On the next page check the box “Renewal of DL”, then click proceed.

  • On the next page, you will see all your details and driving license details. If you want anything changed then click on “update”. Next, fill in the captcha and submit it.

  • On the next page print the acknowledgment paper and click next.
  • Now you have to upload the required documents to renew drivers license online. But before that download form 1A from the upper right corner. Now to upload the document check the option and proceed.
  • After successfully uploading all documents upload your photo and signature and then click proceed to payment.
  • After successful payment print the receipt and click next.
  • Now fill your application no and DOB and submit.
  • Next, an OTP will send to your mobile no fill it and submit it.
  • On the next page select your appointment date and click on book slot.
  • Now print the appointment letter.

Offline steps in renewal of driving licence 

You may need to visit RTO for renewal after online application in few states or cities. After online submission of form and uploading documents through parivahan as above mentioned, you will have to follow the given steps:

  • After online payment of fees, book appointment for RTO visit
  • Visit to the selected RTO and submit the online filled application form and other documents.
  • RTO will verify your application form and documents.
  • After verification, you will receive your renewed driving license at your address.

Validity of driving licence

  1. Driving licence is valid for 20 years from date of issue or till the person turns 40 whichever is earlier
  2. After 40 years of age, it will be issued for 10 years and then 5 years subsequently.

But as per age category, the validity varies as per given below table:
