How to apply for an Iran visa for Indians?

Indians can get an Iranian visa beforehand, or on arrival. The processes for both of these are mentioned below.

Applying for a Iran visa for Indians at the Embassy/Consulate:

  1. Ensure you have your visa code from either of the sources mentioned above. 
  2. Log on to the official website for Iranian visas. 
  3. Fill in the details asked for on the screen and proceed with the application form. 
  4. Ensure you fill correct and accurate information. 
  5. Once the application form is completed, click on ‘Submit’.
  6. After the submission of the form, there will be a Verification Code sent to you on the email you have entered.
  7. On the Verification page, enter the code that was emailed to you.
  8. A barcode will appear on the screen and the confirmation message will be visible. Print the confirmation page with the barcode.
  9. A tracking code visible on the screen should be noted. 
  10. You can then visit the nearest Embassy of Iran to you.
  11. Submit your documents and in some cases wherein an interview is required, the interview will be conducted.

Applying for Iran e Visa from India/visa on arrival

The steps for applying for a visa on arrival in Iran is similar to those mentioned above. The difference is that after the tracking code is noted, your visa application will be processed online using MFA e visa website. On approval, an eVisa Grant Notice will be issued to you via email. This document needs to be printed and carried along with you when you enter Iran.

When you land in Iran, you can visit the Visa Issuance offices at the airport. Submit all your documents and pay the visa fee (only in cash, and only Euros are accepted).

It is often more time consuming to apply for a visa on arrival, with increased chances of the application getting rejected.

Passport validity for International travel

Documents required for Iran visa : 

  • Passport with a validity of at least 6 months from the date of departure from Iran. The passport should all have at least two blank pages. Old passports to be attached.
  • Visa application form. Form 37.1 has to be printed and signed by the individual applying and Form 37.2 has to be filled by hand and signed.
  • Two recent passport size images which abide by the following guidelines:
  1. The image should be in color and taken within the last six months.
  2. The file format should be JPEG, and between 10kB to 500kB.
  3. Image should be 400mm wide and 600 mm high, with the individuals face covering 75% of the space.
  4. White or off white background.
  5. Face should be aligned with the camera.
  6. Neutral expression, eyes open, mouth closed.
  7. Everyday clothing to be worn, no uniforms apart from those worn for religious reasons.
  8. No head covering apart from that worn for religious reasons. Even then, the full face should be clearly visible. 
  9. No eyeglasses apart from those worn for medical reasons (if there is a valid medical reason, a medical statement signed by a health practitioner must be submitted for the same). Frames should not cover the eyes, cause any glares,  shadows or refraction.
  10. Digitally scanned photos or photos that differ from the above guidelines are invalid. 
  • Cover letter mentioning the applicants details, passport number, stay details, etc. The applicant should sign it and address it to the Consulate General of Iran of the city they are applying in.
  • Invitation letter. 
  • Proof of financial status including bank statements and tax returns.
  • Return air tickets, proposed itinerary, proof of accommodation.
  • Medical reports for diseases such as HIV and hepatitis from a verified pathology lab.

The Invitation Letter is a very specific document. A travel agency based in Iran, or a friend or relative living in Iran who is able and willing to host you, or the company you are in business with, can issue this letter on your behalf. The entity will need to send an application and the letter to the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA). On the processing of the application, if you are viable to apply for a visa, you will be sent a visa code. The code has to be taken by you while you go to the Consulate to submit the remaining visa application documents. If you wish to apply for the visa code on your own, you can do so on the official Iranian MFA website
