Does passport number change after renewal?

Yes, your passport number changes after renewal or reissue. Every passport issued by the government is treated as a unique document. The passport number is its unique ID—similar to how a vehicle registration or license number.

When you renew your passport, the old one is canceled for travel. And Indians get new passports with different numbers after the renewal process. If there is a valid visa on the old passport, don’t worry; you can use the already-issued visa by keeping the old passport.

Passport number change because of these reasons:

  • Changing the number keeps passports safe and easy to track. It also prevents misuse of the old passport.
  • A renewed passport is treated as a completely new document, even if your details stay the same, so it gets a new number.

What happens to the old passport when you renew it?

When you renew your passport, the old one doesn’t just disappear. Your old passport is returned to you with a “Cancelled” stamp. This makes it invalid for travel, but it remains a valid reference document for:

  • Past travel history.
  • Existing visas that were issued before the renewal.

Any visas linked to the old passport number remain valid until their expiry. But, you need to carry both your old and new passports while traveling to ensure seamless immigration processing.

Passport renewal in India

An Indian passport is an official document that allows Indian citizens to travel abroad and serves an evidence of their citizenship, age, birth and residence in foreign countries as per the Passport Act. This travel document is issued by Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India.

You need a valid Indian passport, whether you are an adult or minor, to travel to foreign destinations for any purpose.

Indians can renew passport online through Passport Seva website. You need to register yourself and login again to fill up the renewal form online.  Thereafter, book an appointment as per your desired time and date with your nearest PSK/PPO. You have to pay the passport renewal fees. Take a print out of the acknowledgement form after the online process is complete.

On the day of appointment, go to the PSK/PPO where you booked for the renewal procedure. Submit your original documents, photos and acknowledgement form. You have to go for police verification It will take some time to renew the passport.

For Minor

  3. Proof of address (if present address different from old passport)

How to renew an Indian passport?

You can go to the Passport Seva Kendra for renewal or do it online.

Follow the steps below to renew your old passport:-

  1. Go to Passport Seva Home(passportindia.gov.in)
  2. Register and login with ID
  3. Click on “re-issue of passport” link
  4.  Fill up all the required fields and submit the form.
  5. Click on “Pay and Schedule an appointment” link to book an appointment with your nearest PSK.
  6. Choose your desired date and time.
  7. You will be redirected to a secure payment gateway. Pay your passport renewal fees using Credit, debit,visa, master card, SBI challan or online banking.
  8. Click on “Print application receipt” to take a print out of the application page.
  9. Visit the PSK/PSO on the day of appointment with original documents.
  10. After PSK visit, you need to undergo police verification at police station near your address.

How much time does it take to renew a passport in India?

It takes around 7–14 days for Tatkal passport renewal process and 30–45 days for normal passport renewal procedure.

Will my passport number remain the same after renewal?
