They lay down science-based standards. It also regulates manufacture, storage, distribution, sale and import of food to ensure it is safe for consumption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As per Section 31(1) and 31(2) of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, every Food Business Operator (FBO) in India is required to get FSSAI registration or license. The licensing and registration procedure are regulated by the Food Safety &amp; Standards Regulations, 2011. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>FSSAI registration is meant for petty food manufacturers like small retailers, hawkers, itinerant vendors, temporary stallholders and small or cottage-scale industries with annual turnover of up to \u20b912 lakh. Any food business with turnover above \u20b912 lakh is required to apply for FSSAI license instead of registration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Types_of_FSSAI_Registration\"><\/span>Types of FSSAI Registration<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Food Business Operators (FBOs) must apply for appropriate FSSAI registration or license based on size, scale, and nature of their business. FSSAI issues three types of approvals:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Basic Registration \u2013 Small food businesses<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>State License \u2013 Medium-scale food businesses<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Central License \u2013 Large food businesses<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Basic_FSSAI_Registration_Small_Food_Businesses\"><\/span><strong><strong>Basic FSSAI Registration (Small Food Businesses)<\/strong><\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This is meant for small food business operators like local shops, street vendors, temporary food stalls, home-based kitchens and small family-run businesses with yearly sales up to \u20b912 lakh. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Registration process &#8211; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol>\n<li>Submit Form A with fee of \u20b9100 per year.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Generate Unique Application Reference Number.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Registering Authority will approve or reject application within 7 days.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If required, inspection may be conducted within 30 days.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Once approved, FBO may start the business<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><strong>Fees for Registration Certificate<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>New Registration: \u20b9100\/year<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Renewal: \u20b9100\/year<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Duplicate Certificate: 10% of the applicable fee<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"FSSAI_State_License_Medium_Food_Businesses\"><\/span><strong>FSSAI State License (Medium Food Businesses)<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>State licenses are issued by the State Food Safety Authority to food businesses with turnover above \u20b912 lakh and up to \u20b920 crore, depending on capacity and activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Eligibility_for_State_License\"><\/span><strong>Eligibility for State License<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Manufacturers<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Dairy units: Handling 501 to 50,000 litres of milk per day OR up to 2,500 MT of milk solids per year.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Vegetable oil units: Processing up to 2 MT per day with turnover above \u20b912 lakh.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Slaughterhouses:\n<ul>\n<li>Large animals: 3 to 50 per day<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Small animals: 11 to 150 per day<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Poultry: 51 to 1000 birds per day<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Meat processing units: Up to 500 kg per day OR 150 MT per year.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Other food processing units (relabeling &amp; repacking): More than 100 kg\/litre up to 2 MT per day (except grain\/cereal\/pulse mills).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Other Businesses<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Storage (normal): Up to 50,000 MT capacity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cold storage: Up to 10,000 MT capacity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Controlled atmosphere + cold storage: Up to 1,000 MT capacity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wholesalers: Turnover up to \u20b930 crore.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Retailers, distributors, suppliers, caterers, marketers: Turnover up to \u20b920 crore.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Restaurants: Turnover up to \u20b920 crore.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hotels: 3-star and above or turnover more than \u20b912 lakh.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Transporters: Up to 100 vehicles\/wagons OR turnover up to \u20b930 crore.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Clubs\/canteens: Turnover more than \u20b912 lakh.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dhabas, boarding houses, banquet halls, home-based canteens, food stalls at fairs\/religious gatherings, fish\/meat\/poultry shops: Turnover more than \u20b912 lakh.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Premises in Central Government Agencies<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Food catering services in railways, airports, seaports, defence units, etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Applies to catering services in government establishments, except at certain major seaports (Kandla, Tuticorin, Vizag, Kolkata, Marmagoa, Cochin, Mumbai, Chennai, JNPT) and airports (Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, etc.), which fall under Central License.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Fees_for_State_FSSAI_License\"><\/span><strong>Fees for State FSSAI License<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>1. Renewal fees depend on the number of years selected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3. Fee for modification of license &#8211; The fees for modification of the license is fees for one (1) year per license modification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>4.
