Marriage must already be performed through traditional ceremony. Registration only records an existing marriage. Registration is done at Sub-Registrar office where marriage took place or where either spouse has lived for at least six months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Special_Marriage_Act_1954\"><\/span>Special Marriage Act, 1954<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Special Marriage Act applies to all Indian citizens, regardless of religion. It is used for inter-religious, inter-caste and court marriages. Marriage is solemnized and registered under this Act. Thirty-day prior notice is required. Three witnesses are required. No religious ceremony is required. Registration is done by Marriage Officer appointed under this Act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Indian_Christian_Marriage_Act_1872\"><\/span>Indian Christian Marriage Act, 1872<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Indian Christian Marriage Act applies when one or both partners are Christian. Marriage is performed by Priest or Minister. Marriage details are sent to Registrar for issuance of certificate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Muslim_Marriage_Registration_Nikahnama\"><\/span>Muslim Marriage Registration (Nikahnama)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Muslim marriage is governed by Muslim Personal Law. Marriage (Nikah) is civil contract. Nikahnama is written marriage contract. Registration rules differ by state. If husband abandons wife, law can require him to provide maintenance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prevents Bigamy: Official registration makes it difficult for person to enter another marriage illegally.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The legitimacy of Child: It may come in handy in case there are issues related to the legitimacy of your child.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Divorce:\u00a0Marriage certificate is required by the attorney in cases related to alimony, custody of children and other divorce proceedings.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Property Matters: It helps the widow\/ widower in inheriting property of his\/ her deceased spouse.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Settling Abroad: Marriage certificate is required when applying for spouse visa or immigration.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Socially Acceptable: Helps prevent child marriages since certificate records legal age of both partners.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Marriage registration is simple process in India.
