Getting around in Oman

There are direct flights from various major cities from India to Oman: Kochi, Mumbai, Delhi, and Kolkata. It takes 8–10 hours from Kolkata. Public Buses: The government of Oman’ transport company Mwasalat runs all the public buses that connects all major cities in Oman. Buses are cheap, safe and easiest way to travel anywhere Sohar to Salalah. There are small mini buses and big AC buses that ply in Oman.

Regular Taxis: The average cost of taxi is 6 OMR from Muscat International to any place in Muscat. Taxis are orange and white. Orange are private taxis while white ones are route-bound.

Company Taxis: Just like OLA and Uber, Oman too has its own taxi apps: Marhaba and Mwasalat. Their service is the best. They are the safest, cleanest and most efficient in the Sultanate. They operate only in Muscat and are pricey.

Ferry: The National Ferry Service is another common choice to commute between port cities. You can travel with your car and luggage easily in Ferry.

You can start early from your hotel in Al Khuwair to explore the sites in Muscat on foot.

Day 1: Explore Muscat

Spend the afternoon exploring the city’s historic centres

  •  The Al Alam Palace: This is the official ceremonial residence of the Sultan of Oman. It is known for its beautiful facade with bright blue and gold columns.
  • The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque: You can see this beautiful architecture free of cost. It has 5 minarets of 91 m that represent the pillars of Islam.
  • The Mutrah Souk: In the evening, go and bargain in the Mutrah Souk to buy gifts and souvenirs for yourself and relatives.

Enjoy a delicious Omani dinner at a local restaurant in the Mutrah Souk.

Day 2: Day trip to Wadi Shab, Muscat

You can rent a car and start early in the morning to drive to Wadi Sahab.

  • Wadi Shab: a stunning oasis with a hidden waterfall. You can hike through the gorge and swim in the refreshing water.
  • Bimmah Sinkhole is a breathtaking natural wonder filled with crystal-clear water. Formed from limestone, this sinkhole offers a perfect spot for a refreshing swim or a chance to admire the stunning views from the surrounding cliffs.

You can take a long drive to Muscat to return in the evening.

Day 3: Explore Nizwa

Please start early and rent a car to drive to Nizwa. You should drive to the various sites by yourself.

  • Nizwa Fort: It is a well-preserved fortress of 17th Century. You can learn about Nizwa history here. Visit Nizwa Gate that is a 15 minutes drive from Nizwa Fort.
  • Jabreen Castle is a 30-minutes drive from Nizwa Gate. It is renowned for its distinctive architectural style, combining defensive elements with luxurious features. It is a UNESCO site. You can learn the Omani history and admire the architecture.
  • Nizwa Souk: It is a 40 minutes drive from Jabreen Castle. In the evening, you can go buy silver items and handicrafts in Nizwa Souk.

Day 4: Explore Salalah

You can check out of the hotel in Nizwa and fly to Salalah. It takes 1.5 hours by flight.

  • Land of Frankincense is the highlight of Salalah. It consists of three UNESCO sites and a museum. The sites are ‘Al Baleed Archeological Site’, ‘Sumharam Old City’ (khor Rori), ‘Wubar Archeological Site’ and ‘Wadi Dawkah’.
  • Land of Frankincense Museum: The Museum of the Land of Frankincense is a fascinating place that delves deep into the history and cultural significance of frankincense in Oman.
  • Al Mughsail Beach: It is wellknown for its blowholes or natural fountains. You can relax on the beach or take a boat trip to see the coastline.

Day 5: Day trip to Wadi Darbat, Salalah

You can take a day trip before you depart for Muscat from Salalah.

  • Wadi Darbat: The lush greenery, the mountains, the falls is the perfect place to relax. You can paddle a boat or go hiking in the Wadi Darbat Valley.
  • Taqah Castle: In the afternoon, you may visit Taqah Castle. It is a 15 minutes drive from Wadi Darbat. It is a historic fort built in 17th Century.·
