Uttarakhand Road tax

If you own a vehicle in Uttarakhand, you must pay Uttarakhand road tax. It’s charged by the Transport Department under the Uttarakhand Motor Vehicle Taxation Act. Road tax in Uttarakhand is used to maintain and build roads across the state.

When registering a new or used vehicle, you’ll need to submit a Declaration Form with details like vehicle type, seating capacity, and purpose.

Pay your Uttarakhand RTO tax on time. Some older vehicles on annual tax must pay by 15th January. For others, the due date depends on your billing cycle — before the next month, quarter, or year starts.

Also note: Vehicles entering from outside Uttarakhand may have to pay Green Cess.
EVs, two-wheelers, and locally registered vehicles are usually exempt. Charges vary by vehicle type.

How do you calculate Uttarakhand road tax?

Calculating road tax in Uttarakhand isn’t based on one fixed formula. It’s a tiered system, and the final tax amount depends on several key factors:

Factors that determine Road Tax in Uttarakhand

1. Vehicle Type

Different types of vehicles are taxed differently:

  • Two-wheelers
  • Private Cars (Four-wheelers)
  • Three-wheelers (Auto-rickshaws)
  • Commercial Vehicles (goods carriers, taxis, buses)
  • Construction Equipment
  • Tractors

2. Vehicle Price (Ex-showroom Price)

For private vehicles, the road tax is based on the vehicle’s ex-showroom price.

Private Cars:

  • Up to ₹5 Lakhs – 8% of the price
  • ₹5–10 Lakhs – 9% of the price
  • Above ₹10 Lakhs – 10% of the price

Two-Wheelers:

  • Under ₹10 Lakhs – 6% of the price
  • Above ₹10 Lakhs – 8% of the price

Additionally, an annual ₹200 tax is applicable on two-wheelers.

3. Seating Capacity (for Commercial Passenger Vehicles)

This applies to commercial vehicles like taxis, autos, and maxi-cabs.

For example:

  • A vehicle with 3 or fewer seats (excluding the driver) may attract a fixed annual or one-time tax.

4. Vehicle Weight (GVW or ULW)

This applies to goods vehicles, tractors, and construction vehicles.

Example:

  • Goods vehicles over 3000 kg may be charged ₹850 per metric ton annually.

GVW = Gross Vehicle Weight
ULW = Unladen Weight

5. Purpose of Use

  • Private vehicles (like personal cars and bikes): Usually taxed one-time at registration.
  • Commercial vehicles (like buses, trucks, taxis): Usually taxed monthly, quarterly, or annually, and at higher rates.

6. Route and Distance (for Stage Carriers/Buses)

For buses that run on fixed routes:

  • The tax depends on whether the route is plain or hilly, and
  • If the total distance exceeds 1500 km, tax is calculated per km per seat.

7. Temporary Registration

Vehicles with temporary registration pay a flat fee, usually:

  • ₹200–₹600 based on vehicle type (2W, LMV, HMV)

Example: Road Tax Calculation for a Private Car

If you buy a new private car with an ex-showroom price of ₹7,50,000:

  • This falls under the ₹5–10 lakh slab.
  • Tax rate is 9%.

Calculation:
₹7,50,000 × 9% = ₹67,500

So, ₹67,500 is your one-time road tax payment at registration.
