Check the amount of road tax in Tamilnadu
If you want to check amount of road tax, follow these steps:
- Go to Parivahan Vahan portal and select “Know MV Tax” from the menu.
- Now fill in the following information about your vehicle:
- Choose your state.
- Vehicle types (Transport or Non-Transport)
- Choose a Vehicle Class
- Choose a vehicle category.
- Date of registration
- Fill in all relevant information about your vehicle.
- Click the Get Tax Details button after entering the captcha code.
- Display your vehicle tax information on the screen and pay Tamil Nadu road tax.
Tamil Nadu road tax online payment
Check the procedure for Tamil Nadu road tax online payment by following the steps below:
- Go to the Vahan Parivahan website at Vahan Parivahan, open the official website.
- Choose Tamil Nadu, select your local RTO, and click Proceed.
- From the menu, select RC Related Services or click Pay Your Tax.
- Enter your vehicle registration number and the last 5 digits of the chassis number.
- Check the pending tax amount shown on the screen. Pay using net banking, debit card, or UPI.
- Download and save the payment receipt. You will need this receipt for RC renewal and future reference.
Pay Road Tax in Tamilnadu Offline:
If you want to pay road tax in Tamil Nadu offline, visit your nearest Regional Transport Office. You can pay road tax in cash or by demand draft at the RTO counter.
How to pay road tax Tamil Nadu for other state vehicle
If you bring a vehicle from another state into Tamil Nadu, you must pay road tax to use it legally. Commercial vehicles must pay other-state vehicle tax. For private vehicles, road tax payment is mandatory if you use the vehicle in Tamil Nadu for more than 12 months. You can pay road tax online in Tamil Nadu through official Parivahan portal, instead of border check posts. Get NOC from the RTO where the vehicle is registered.

- To find out your transaction status, go to the Parivahan Vahan portal
- Select “Transaction Status” option and then “Know Your Transaction Status” from the menu to proceed further.
- Select one of the options, such as Transaction id, Payment id, Bank Ref. No., Registration No. or Grn No. and fill out the required information.
- When you click the Search Button, your payment status will appear on your screen.
Who is exempt from paying road tax in Tamil Nadu
Owners of the following vehicles are exempt from paying road tax in Tamil Nadu:
- Vehicles owned by persons with disabilities and used only for their personal transportation
- Vehicles used exclusively for agricultural purposes
- Ambulances
- Vehicles carrying personnel of the Ministry of Defence or Central and State Armed Forces while in uniform
- Vehicles owned by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI)
- Fire-fighting department vehicles
- Vehicles used as funeral vans
Time period for the Tamil Nadu road tax online payment
Under Tamil Nadu Motor Vehicles Taxation Act, road tax is mandatory in Tamil Nadu. Registered owner or any person who has possession or control of the vehicle must pay tax as prescribed under the Act.
You can pay road tax quarterly, half-yearly or annually based on the licence issued for that period. You must pay tax within the allowed time, starting from the beginning of quarter or half-year. The time limit is at least 7 days and not more than 45 days. The exact payment period depends on your vehicle type.
