When registering a new or used vehicle, you’ll need to submit Declaration Form with details like vehicle type, seating capacity, and purpose.

You should always pay your Uttarakhand RTO tax on time. Some older vehicles on annual tax must pay by 15th January. For others, the due date depends on your billing cycle before next month, quarter, or year starts.

Also note: Vehicles entering from outside Uttarakhand may have to pay Green Cess.
EVs, two-wheelers, and locally registered vehicles are usually exempt. Charges vary by vehicle type.

How do you calculate Uttarakhand road tax?

Road tax in Uttarakhand is not fixed. Amount changes based on your vehicle details. Factors that determine Road Tax in Uttarakhand

1. Vehicle Type

Private Cars:

  • Up to ₹5 Lakhs – 8% of the price
  • ₹5–10 Lakhs – 9% of the price
  • Above ₹10 Lakhs – 10% of the price

Two-Wheelers:

  • Under ₹10 Lakhs – 6% of the price
  • Above ₹10 Lakhs – 8% of the price

Additionally, an annual ₹200 tax is applicable on two-wheelers.

3. Seating Capacity (for Commercial Passenger Vehicles)

In taxis, autos, or vans, tax depends on seating capacity.

4. Vehicle Weight (GVW or ULW)

For trucks, tractors, and heavy vehicles:

  • Tax is based on weight (like per ton)
  • Example: Heavy goods vehicles may pay around ₹850 per ton per year

5. Purpose of Use

  • Private vehicles (like personal cars and bikes): Usually taxed one-time at registration.
  • Commercial vehicles (like buses, trucks, taxis): Usually taxed monthly, quarterly, or annually, and at higher rates.

6. Route and Distance (for Stage Carriers/Buses)

For buses that run on fixed routes:

  • Tax depends on whether route is plain or hilly, and
  • If total distance exceeds 1500 km, tax is calculated per km per seat.

7. Temporary Registration

If your vehicle has temporary registration, you pay a small fixed fee of ₹200–₹600, depending on vehicle type (2W, LMV, HMV).

How to make online road tax payment Uttarakhand

You can pay road tax online while registering your vehicle.You can pay the road tax online at the Vahan portal or Uttarakhand’s official Transport website. Here are steps for how to pay Uttarakhand road tax.

  1. Visit the Official Vahan Portal
  2. Select your state – choose “Uttarakhand” from dropdown list.
  3. After selecting state, choose your vehicle’s RTO from list and click “Proceed.”
  4. On services page, go to “Online Services” > “Vehicle Related Services” and click on “Pay Your Tax”
  5. Enter vehicle registration number (e.g., UK07AB1234) and last five characters of chassis number. Click “Verify Details”
  6. The portal will show vehicle details and tax amount due. Verify all details carefully.
  7. For certain vehicle types (especially commercial), select whether you want to pay monthly, quarterly, yearly, or one-time.
  8. Proceed to payment and choose your payment option: Net Banking, Credit/Debit Card, or UPI.
  9. After successful payment, download and print your receipt as proof of payment.

Types of Road taxes Uttarakhand

Road tax depends on vehicle type, price, seating capacity, weight, and use whether it’s for private or commercial use. Here is road tax structure in Uttarakhand:

(1) Uttarakhand onetime road tax based on price

You pay this at time of registration. This tax covers 15 years for private vehicles.

This section applies to taxis, maxi-cabs, and other commercial passenger vehicles.

(5) Uttarakhand Road Tax for temporarily registered vehicles

Applicable to vehicles that have temporary registrations before permanent ones.

Penalty for not paying Uttarakhand road tax

If you fail to pay your Uttarakhand road tax on time:

  • You may be charged penalty of ₹500 for initial default.
  • Continued failure may attract higher fine of ₹1000 or more.
