2. How can I renew my driving licence online in Chennai ?

  • Visit the Parivahan portal’s official website to access online RTO services.
  • Navigate to the “Online Services” drop-down menu and select “DL Related Services”.
  • Select the state name “Tamilnadu” from the drop-down list on the next page.
  • Click on “Apply for DL Renewal”, read the instructions on the next page and click the “Continue” button.
  • Enter your DL number and date of birth, input the captcha code and click on “Get DL Details”.
  • Verify the DL details, select the DL category, state and RTO and click “Proceed”.
  • Select “DL Renewal” as the service type and fill out the online form.
  • Upload the required documents and click “Submit”.
  • Note the system-generated application number and print/download the acknowledgement receipt.

Fees for driving license renewal in Tamilnadu is :

  • Renewal of driving licence - Rs. 200
  • Renewal of a driving licence for which application is made after the grace period - Rs. 300
  • Additional fee at the rate of Rs. 1000 for delay of each year or part thereof reckoned from the date of expiry of the grace period shall be levied
  • Smart card fees - Rs. 200

4. What happens If an accident occurs after the expiry of your Driving Licence?

There is grace period of 1 month after the expiry of driving licence. During grace period there is no late fine.

A driving licence can be renewed within 5 years from the date of its expiry. However there is late fine after grace period expires. But remember that driving with an expired licence is an offence.

5. Can I change the address in my Driving Licence while applying for renewal?

6. My DL has already expired; can I still renew it

Yes, you can. There is a grace period of 30 days after the expiration date of a Driving Licence. If you apply for DL renewal within these 30 days, there will not be any late fine.

DL renewal after the grace period is also possible, but it increases the fees of the procedure. For each year's delay, you have to pay a fine of Rs. 1,000, along with the cost of renewal and smart card.
