Validity for Non Transport Vehicles

a) If the age of the applicant on the date of issue or renewal is less than 30 years, then the Non Transport Validity would be till the attainment of 40 years

b) If the age of the applicant on the date of issue or renewal is >= 30 and <50, then the Non Transport Validity would be for a period of 10 years

c) If the age of the applicant on the date of issue or renewal is >=50 and <55, then the Non Transport validity would be effective until the date on which such person attains the age of 60 years

d) If the age of the applicant on the date of issue or renewal is >=55, then the Non Transport validity would be effective for a period of 5 years

Fees for driving license renewal in Tamilnadu is :

  • Renewal of driving licence - Rs. 200
  • Renewal of a driving licence for which application is made after the grace period - Rs. 300

4. What happens If an accident occurs after the expiry of your Driving Licence?

There is grace period of 1 month after the expiry of driving licence. During grace period there is no late fine.

A driving licence can be renewed within 5 years from the date of its expiry. However there is late fine after grace period expires. But remember that driving with an expired licence is an offence.

5. Is driving test required for renewal of licence in Chennai?

Driving test is required for renewal of licence in Chennai, if driving licence expired more than one year before . If you are applying for renewal of driving licence before one year from the date of expiry, driving test is not required.


6. My DL has already expired; can I still renew it

Yes, you can. There is a grace period of 30 days after the expiration date of a Driving Licence. If you apply for DL renewal within these 30 days, there will not be any late fine.

DL renewal after the grace period is also possible, but it increases the fees of the procedure. For each year's delay, you have to pay a fine of Rs. 1,000, along with the cost of renewal and smart card.
