A person who possesses a driving licence has to renew it after expiry. 

The validity of a renewed driving licence depends on the age of the driver. While applying for DL renewal, you can make changes to your driving licence if required, like change in address etc. This process is done at the RTO Chennai.

When should renew driving license in Chennai

  • You can renew driving licence in Chennai one year before the expiry of it or after expiry of its validity.
  • For Chennai DL renewal, you get grace period of one month after expiry of Driving licence.  There is late fine for renewal of DL renewal in Chennai after the grace period of 30 days. Late fine is  Rs 1000 per year.

There are four scenarios observed:

  2. Within city : For a change in address in Chennai city only, you can apply at the same Chennai  RTO  
  3. Different city: If your address has changed to another city that is in a different RTO jurisdiction, you have to apply at the respective RTO.

Private Driving license is valid for 20 years from the date of issue or till the holder attains 40 years of age, which comes earlier.

After the age of 40years, the Driving licence will be issued for 10 years & then 5 years subsequently.

Validity for Non Transport Vehicles

a) If the age of the applicant on the date of issue or renewal is less than 30 years, then the Non Transport Validity would be till the attainment of 40 years

b) If the age of the applicant on the date of issue or renewal is >= 30 and <50, then the Non Transport Validity would be for a period of 10 years

c) If the age of the applicant on the date of issue or renewal is >=50 and <55, then the Non Transport validity would be effective until the date on which such person attains the age of 60 years

d) If the age of the applicant on the date of issue or renewal is >=55, then the Non Transport validity would be effective for a period of 5 years

Fees for driving license renewal in Tamilnadu is :

  • Renewal of driving licence - Rs. 200
  • Renewal of a driving licence for which application is made after the grace period - Rs. 300
  • Additional fee at the rate of Rs. 1000 for delay of each year or part thereof reckoned from the date of expiry of the grace period shall be levied
  • Smart card fees - Rs. 200

4. What happens If an accident occurs after the expiry of your Driving Licence?

There is grace period of 1 month after the expiry of driving licence. During grace period there is no late fine.

A driving licence can be renewed within 5 years from the date of its expiry. However there is late fine after grace period expires. But remember that driving with an expired licence is an offence.

5. Is driving test required for renewal of licence in Chennai?

6. My DL has already expired; can I still renew it

Yes, you can. There is a grace period of 30 days after the expiration date of a Driving Licence. If you apply for DL renewal within these 30 days, there will not be any late fine.

DL renewal after the grace period is also possible, but it increases the fees of the procedure. For each year's delay, you have to pay a fine of Rs. 1,000, along with the cost of renewal and smart card.
