Marriage registration - Eligibility

• There should not be subsisting valid marriage of either of the parties with any other person.
• The bridegroom should be of twenty one years and bride should be of eighteen years of age.
• The parties should not be of unsoundness of mind of such a nature as to be unable to give valid consent for the marriage, or suffering from mental disorder of such a kind or to such an extent as to be unfit for marriage and procreation of children, or has been subject to recurrent attacks of insanity.
• The parties should not fall within the degree of prohibited relationship

Marriage acts for marriage registration in Delhi

Marriage registration in Delhi can be done online or in person at the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) office of the area where either spouse has address proof or where the marriage took place. Following are the marriage acts in Delhi:

A) Hindu Marriage Act

To apply for marriage certificate in Delhi under Hindu Marriage Act, there are two kinds of processes for marriage registration in Delhi :

Normal Marriage Registration

1. Submit your application, affidavits, and required documents through the eDistrict Delhi portal
2. If the documents are verified successfully, an appointment date and time will be assigned
3. On the appointment day, the bride, groom, and two witnesses must visit the SDM office with original documents. Personal presence is mandatory to complete the process
4. You will receive the marriage certificate the same day

Tatkal Marriage Registration in Delhi
If you need to register your marriage urgently, the tatkal marriage registration option is available for Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, and Jain couples.

1. Submit your documents and pay the additional fee for tatkal services
2. Your documents will be verified, and the marriage registration will be completed on the same day
3. The marriage certificate will be issued at the end of the process

B) Delhi Anand marriage registration

Marriage registration in Delhi of Sikh married couples is done under the Delhi Anand marriage registration act 2018. Delhi Anand marriage act came into force on 8th February 2018. Under this act a Sikh marriage already solemnized can be registered in the jurisdiction of the marriage registrar office where either of the couple’s place of residence is or where the marriage took place. The marriage certificate online Delhi process is similar to the Hindu marriage registration Delhi procedure.

Note: Tatkal registration is not available for Muslim, Christian, or inter-religious marriages, which must be registered under the Special Marriage Act.

C) Special Marriage Act

This special marriage act is for marriages between Muslims, Christians, or inter-religious couples. The process takes 30 days.

Steps for Registration Under the Special Marriage Act

1. Submit the application and documents to the SDM office
2. A public notice inviting objections will be issued and displayed on the SDM office bulletin board
3. If no objections are received within 30 days, the marriage can be registered

Important Points:

• Both parties must be present to serve the notice
• A copy of the notice is sent to the marriage officer in the area where either spouse resides
• On the date of registration, both spouses and three witnesses must appear at the SDM office

Once registered, you will receive your marriage certificate within 14 days.

Penalty for Late Marriage Registration in Delhi

It’s important to register your marriage within the time limit to avoid penalties. If you delay the registration:

• 60 to 120 Days: Penalty of Rs. 500
• Beyond 120 Days: Penalty of Rs. 1000

You will not be fined for registering marriage that took place before 2014

How to apply for marriage certificate online in Delhi

Following are the steps to apply for marriage certificate in Delhi:

Step 1: Register on the e-District Portal

1. Visit the e-District Delhi portal
2. Click on ‘Registration of Marriage’
3. If you’re a new user, create an account:
   • Upload a scanned passport-sized photo.
   • Provide your Aadhaar or Voter ID details.
   • Select your area of residence accurately (must match your ADM/SDM office jurisdiction).

Step 2: Fill Out the Marriage Registration Form

1. Log in using your credentials
2. Complete the online marriage registration form with your details and your spouse’s details
3. Prepare affidavits as per your SDM office format:
   • Visit the SDM office to confirm the exact format
   • Get the affidavits stamped and attested by a registered official

Step 3: Upload Documents to get Marriage Certificate in Delhi

Upload the following documents to get your Marriage Certificate in Delhi:

1. Scanned affidavits (in the correct format).
2. Proof of identity (e.g., Aadhaar, Voter ID).
3. Proof of address for both husband and wife
4. Age proof for both (e.g., birth certificate, school leaving certificate)

1. Recieve your marriage certificate through office or
2. Log in to the portal to download and print your marriage certificate in Delhi
