There are three main types of tourist visas available for foreigners looking to visit Australia. These include:

  1. ETA Visa. The electronic travel authority visa allows individuals unlimited entry into the country for a year, with the stay for each visit lasting for three months. This kind of visa is only available for ETA-eligible passport holders. [This type of visa is not available for Indians].
  2. eVistor. This visa allows for several entries into Australia for a period of a year, with each visits duration being three months. Holding this visa allows individuals to engage in tourist and business activities. This type of visa is available only for those holding passports from specific European countries.
  3. Visitor Visa. This is the type of visa that an Indian national can avail of. This visa allows individuals to visit Australia for business or leisure purposes. The duration of stay under this visa is usually three months, but can be extended to 12 months under certain circumstances. 

Under the visitor visa subclass, there are different streams available. These are

  1. Tourist stream, wherein the applicant is already in Australia.
  2. Tourist stream, wherein the application is done from outside the country.
  3. Sponsored family stream, wherein the individual is sponsored by someone who is an Australian citizen or a permanent resident of Australia. 
  4. Business visitor stream, wherein the applicant wishes to visit Australia for business purposes. 
  5. Approved Destination Status stream, wherein the applicant is from certain parts of the Republic of China and is intending on visiting Australia as a part of an organized group tour. 
  6. The Frequent Traveler stream is for Chinese passport holders who travel frequently to Australia for business or personal reasons. 

An Indian national looking to visit Australia for tourism purposes should opt for the tourist stream of the Visitor Visa (Subclass 600).

The documents required while applying for an Australian visa include:

  • Passport with a validity of at least six months or more from the estimated date of arrival in Australia. Coloured and scanned copies of the pages of the present passport, and if applicable, old passports, need to be submitted. 
  • Australian Visa Form. This form is available online on the ImmiAccount website. You will need to create your ImmiAccount in order to access and fill the form. 
  • Copy of a photograph adhering to the following guidelines
  1. The picture should be recent, i.e., taken within the last six months.
  2. Australia visa photo size should be 35 to 40 mm in width and 45mm to 50 mm in height, with a white background
  3. The entire face should be centrally aligned, looking at the camera, with no tilt, and clearly visible. 
  4. Individuals hair should not be covering their faces in any way. 
  5. Neutral expression, eyes should be open and mouths should be closed. 
  6. Face jewelry such as piercings, headwear [apart from that worn for religious reasons], sunglasses, uniform is not permitted. 
  7. Eyewear such as prescription glasses can be worn as long as the doctors report is submitted, eyes are not blocked by the glass frames, and lenses do not reflect. There should be no red eyes. 
  8. Lighting should be appropriate and no editing is allowed. 
  • Scanned copy of the individual’s National Identity Card, such as the Aadhar card or PAN card for Indians.
  • A police certificate which can be used to determine if you meet the characteristic requirements is needed. This document is used as a proof of good character.
  • Civil documents such as the birth certificate is needed. If applicable, it also includes copies of the individual’s marriage certificate, proof of legal change in name, divorce papers, and/or adoption papers. 
  • Proof of financial means to support the individual during their stay in Australia. Includes bank documents, tax records, salary audits, and so on.
  • An authorized recipient form, which is available on the ImmiAccount needs to be completed and filled if the application is being done/assisted by a third party.
  • Proof of accommodation and copy of air tickets. 
  • Proposed detailed itinerary.

The process of applying for an Australian visa is highlighted below:

  1. Prepare all necessary documents as mentioned .
  2. Log on to your ImmiAccount, or if you are applying for the first time, create a new account. 
  3. Complete the formalities and ensure all necessary documents are attached.
  4. Pay the stipulated visa fee online. [If applicants face trouble in this, they can speak to the Embassy and they might be permitted to pay in person.]
  5. There will be an acknowledgement of receipt of the visa application shared with the applicant via email.
  6. Once the visa is processed, the applicant will be informed via email if the visa has been granted or not. If your visa is approved, you will get a Visa Grant Notice in addition to details of when the visa starts and the conditions for the same.

As of now, Australia does not allow for the status of the visa to be tracked by the applicant. The applicant will only know if their visa has been approved or not when they receive an official email by the authorities.
