As there are many types of China visas, Indians need to obtain a China visa from India for any purpose of visit, like business, work, or tourism. And you can apply online for a China visa, except by downloading the application form. It is necessary to visit visa application center of China Embassy in India to submit the filled-out application form. The centers are in New Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata.

Chinese visas fall into four types. These are:

  1. Diplomatic visa
  2. Courtesy visa
  3. Service visa
  4. Ordinary visa. 

Under ordinary visas, there is a further division of this kind of visa into 16 categories.

  1. Visa C:This is applicable for those who are crew members of modes of international travel or their accompanying family members (i.e. aircraft/train/ship crew members and their familial companions).
  2. Visa D:Immigrants looking for permanent residence in China.
  3. Visa F:Foreigners looking to go to China for short durations for non-business purposes, like for an exchange program, visit, or study tour. 
  4. Visa G:Transit visa, i.e. those looking to transit through China while traveling elsewhere.
  5. Visa J1:International journalists of foreign news stations who are stationed in China, with an intention of staying in China for a period more than 180 days. 
  6. Visa J2:International journalists looking to stay in China for less than 180 days, covering short-term news. 
  7. Visa L:Travelers looking to go to China for tourism purposes only. 
  8. Visa M:International citizens traveling to China for commercial purposes. 
  9. Visa Q1:Foreigners looking to travel for family reunions or for foster care purposes. Includes family members of Chinese nationals or immigrants with permanent residency. For those intending to stay for more than 180 days.
  10. Visa Q2:Individuals traveling to meet/visit their relatives who are Chinese citizens or those having permanent residence in China. The duration of intended stay is less than 180 days. [Family members includes partners, parents, offsprings, spouses of the offspring, siblings, grandparents, grandchildren and in laws] 
  11. Visa R:Highly skilled or talented foreign nationals whose skills can be utilized in China.
  12. Visa S1:Individuals looking to travel to China for private affairs such as to visit their spouses/parents/offsprings aged below 18 years who are studying or working in China. For cases wherein intended stay is more than 180 days.
  13. Visa S2:Individuals looking to travel to China for private affairs as mentioned above, but the intended duration of the stay falls below 180 days. 
  14. Visa X1:Students looking to stay in China to study for more than 180 days.
  15. Visa X2:Students looking to stay in China for educational purposes, but for less than 180 days. 
  16. Visa Z:Similar to a work visa; for individuals with the intention to stay in China to work.

Documents required for China Visa

A tourist hoping to visit China for vocational purposes is required to apply for Visa. The requirements for this kind of visa are: 

  • A completed printed confirmation of the application form.
  • The filled in application form (8 pages). 
  •  China visa photo size
  1. White background, no edge frames, colored image, taken within the previous 6 months.
  2. The photo should be 48 by 33mm, with the width of the head being 15 x 22 mm and the height of the head being 28 x 33 mm. 
  3. The entire head should be captured, with the face being clearly visible. Neutral expressions, eyes open, lips closed, and ears should be shown.
  4. The head should be centered, and the position should be less than 20° tilted to either side, and less than 25° tilted vertically in either direction. 
  5. There are no damages, impurities, permeations, or shadows on the picture. Ensure no under or overexposure, red-eyes, distortion, or a natural tone. 
  6. Thick-rimmed, tinted, or glare eyewear is not allowed, rest of the types of glasses are allowed.
  7. Headwear, apart from religious headwear, is not permitted. 
  • Printed copy of the appointment letter, the Appointment for Visa Application Submission’s confirmation which the applicant receives on making the online reservation.
  • Passport with one set of double blank pages for the visa, and with a validity of at least six months since the intended date of entry in China. 
  • Printed copy of the passport page with the individual's photograph.
  • Intended itinerary, proof of air tickets and accommodation confirmation. 
  • If applicable, the individual should also carry their previous copies of Chinese passports (of renounced citizens) and/or past visas. 
  • Personal written statement, a cover letter.

How To Apply

Apply for China Visa

The visa can be submitted only by going to the Visa Center in person. The centers are in New Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata. 

  1. Fill up the China Online Visa Application, which is available on the official website of the Chinese Visa Application Service Center on this link: ‘Visa Application Form’.
  2. The visa appointment can be made on the visaforchina.cn website, under the ‘Appointment (Application)’ section. 
  3. Once you get your slot, arrive on time. You will be given a queue number upon arrival.
  4. As and when your number is called, you can submit your application at the designated counter and you will receive a pick up form. This form outlines the date for collection of your passport (which needs to be submitted in person with the form), and details of your application.
  5. Make the payment at the cashier's counter at the Visa Center and collect the payment receipt.
  6. On the date mentioned on the pick up form, you will be able to collect your passport by presenting the payment receipt and the pick-up form.

There are two fees that need to be paid in order to obtain a Chinese visa.

Visa Fee for China from India

  1. Single entry visa charges- INR 3900
  2. Double entry visa charge- INR 5850
  3. Multiple Entries in 6 months- INR 7800
  4. Multiple Entries in 1 year- INR 11700

Application Service Fee

  1. Regular Service- INR 1838 (inc. of service tax)
  2. Express Service/ Postal Service/ Premium Lounge - INR 2709 (inc. of service tax)

[In express service, the pick up of the visa can be done on the next day if the application was submitted before 11 a.m. on said day, and is picked up after 2 p.m. on the next working day. The fee charged for a day’s delay in collection is INR 1800.]

The payment of the fees needs to be done after the visa application is submitted at the consular office. The sole accepted mode of payment is cash; bank transfers or other methods are not accepted.

The visa usually takes 4 working days if the individual opts for the regular service, and 3 working days if the express service is opted for Individuals are requested to apply for the visa at least a month before their intended date of arrival in China.
