There are essentially three categories of visas available for Indians. The categories are:

  1. The airport transit visa is for those individuals who are looking to stop in Malta for only a transitional period. As the name suggests, the visa allows the individual to visit the Republic of Malta if they are looking to travel onwards to another country from Malta. The visa is applicable only for a period of 24 hours and only within the limits of the airport. 
  2. The Schengen ‘C’ type visa is a short term visa. This type of visa is for the individuals who are looking to stay in the region of Malta for a period of time which is less than 180 days. Holders of these kind of visas are permitted to visit and stay in the other countries in the Schengen Area as well. 
  3. The Schengen ‘D’ type visa is a long term visa. This is also called the national long stay visa. The holders of this kind of visa allows the individual to stay in the region of Malta for longer than 180 days. This kind of visa can not be extended, and allows the individual to roam across the places where Malta’s diplomatic missions and consular activities are functioning.

  1. Transit Visa is for those individuals looking to stop in Malta for transit purposes, i.e. they are traveling onward from Malta to another country. Individuals with a Schengen visa and Schengen residence permit do not need this visa.

  3. Student visas are for those students who are enrolled in educational institutions and aim to stay in Malta for study purposes. The visa is only valid for 3 months (90 days), post which, a residence permit is needed. 
  4. Family visas are for individuals who are official citizens of the Republic of Malta, or have permanent residency there, and who are looking to bring their family members to Malta.
  5. Golden visa is a unique visa. Under this kind of visa, the individual can be granted citizenship in return of investment in the country.

The validity of short term visas can usually not be extended for over a period of 5 years. The number of entries into the Republic of Malta depends on whether the visa is a single entry, double entry, or multiply entry visa.

Indians looking to acquire a Malta tourist visa should have the following documents in place for the visa application.

  1. Current passport with a minimum validity of at least six months from the date of arrival in Malta. The passport must have 3 or more blank pages for the visa. Old passports should also be submitted.
  2. Filled and signed visa application form.
  3. 2 copies of the individuals photograph. The photograph must adhere to the guidelines mentioned below
    1. The image should not be older than 6 months to ensure representation to the current appearances. 
    2. The size must be 3.5 cm by 4.5 cm.
    3. Plain mono colored background and colored image of the applicant’s face.
    4. Individuals face should be looking at the camera, head should be straight, neutral expression, eyes open, mouth closed.
    5. The entire face, from the top of the forehead to the bottom of the chin to both cheeks should be clearly visible.
    6. High resolution image printed on high quality paper.
  4. Proof of identification cards, such as the individual’s Aadhar card or PAN card.
  5. Cover letter detailing the purpose of the visit (This is an especially important document while applying for a business/work visa).
  6. Proof of financial status. This includes last 6 months worth of bank statements and tax return slips dating back to three years.
  7. Air tickets (return tickets to be provided)
  8. Proof of confirmation of accommodation.
  9. Proposed itinerary
  10. Travel health insurance which covers medical charges going up to 30,000 Euros (INR 26,51,010.00).

How To Apply

Apply for Malta Visa

  1. Download and fill the Maltese visa application form which is available here.
  2. Gather the required documents as mentioned above.
  3. Book a visa appointment at the official Consulate of Malta on the VFS website by following this process: 
    1. Visit the official VFS website.
    2. Click on ‘Book Appointment’. You will be redirected to a new page, where you need to click on the ‘Book Now’ option.
    3. Log in to your account or create a new account by clicking on the ‘New User’ option. You need your registered email address and password to log in.
    4. Pick a date and time for your appointment.
  4. Ensure you reach the office on the chosen date and before time. Carry a copy of your confirmation of the visa appointment.
  5. Submit the documents and complete the biometric information processes as per the requirements. 
  6. Pay the visa fees. 
  7. Collect your receipt. 

There are visa application centers for Maltese tourist applications from India in several cities. The list includes Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chandigarh, Chennai, Hyderabad, Jalandhar, Kochi, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, New Delhi, and Pune.   2. Enter your reference number, which is available on the receipt you will receive on submission of the documents and payment of the fees. You also need to enter your date of birth
