Renewal of Indian Passport Before Expiry Date in India

Do you want to apply for renewal of Indian passport before expiry date? In India, you can apply for renewal/reissue of passport within one year before expiry of exiting passport. The validity of an adult passport is 10 years, and that of a minor passport is 5 years. Thus, if your passport is due to expire in the next year, you should apply for the online passport renewal process.

Renewal of Indian passport before expiry date

You can apply online through the Passport Seva website for the renewal of Indian passport before expiry date. There are two modes of application available: Normal and Tatkal passport applications. Adult as well as minor passport holders can get a reissued passport within one year before expiry of their old passport. You cannot apply for passport renewal before one year of expiry of existing passport.

After online filling out the application form, it needs to pay renewal fees and book an appointment for a PSK visit. You have to visit PSK for document verification. Police verification is required for the renewal of passports. After this process, you will get your renewed passport at your address.

Documents required for passport renewal before expiry 

The documents required for the renewal of Indian passport before expiry date remains same for normal as well as tatkal application mode. You have to submit these documents at PSK on the date of appointment. The mandatory documents required for the passport renewal before expiry are:

For Adult

1. Old passport (Original)  with self-attested copies first and last two pages of the passport
2. Document proof for Non ECR category
3. Proof of address (if present address different from old passport)

For Minor

1. Old passport (Original)  with self-attested copies first and last two pages of the passport
2. Annexure D (Declaration by parents)
3. Proof of address (if present address different from old passport)

How to apply for renewal of Indian passport before expiry?

Here are the steps for the renewal of Indian passport before expiry date

1. First register on the Passport Seva website.
2. If you’ve already registered on the site, click the ‘Existing User Login’ link to log in.
3. If you are not already a member, you must first create an account by clicking on ‘New User Register Now.’
4. Create a login ID and password using the basic information, such as your name and date of birth.
5. Go to the ‘Apply for Fresh Passport/Re-issue of Passport’ tab after you’ve signed in to your passport account.
6. Fill out the form for passport renewal and click ‘Validate’ to save a copy of it.
7. Pay the passport renewal fees and book appointment for PSK visit.
8. Print the application receipt of appointment
9. Visit selected PSK for document verification
10. Undergo police verification at police station near your address

Then, after submissions and verification, you have to wait for 30-45 days under the normal process to get a renewed passport at your address.

If you want to do passport renewal in 2-3 days, you can apply for renewal of an Indian passport before its expiry date through the tatkal mode of application. For the tatkal passport application, you will have to do police verification post issuance of the passport.
