What are the different types of red number plates in India?

Red Number plate India:

The red no plate in India denotes that the car is still in the process of receiving a permanent vehicle registration plate (issued by the RTO). Temporary car registration comes with 1-month validity. The laws governing temporary automobile registration plates vary from state to state. In fact, some Indian states prohibit vehicles with temporary licence plates from driving on public roads.

How to read the Red Number Plate in India?

1. State Code: The first portion of a car number plate shows which state or union territory the vehicle was registered in. The first two alphabets of the car number plate, for example, will be ‘PB’ if the vehicle was registered in the state of ‘Punjab’. In the 1980s, this approach of indicating the state on the licence plate became popular.
2. District Code: The district in which the vehicle was registered is indicated by the next two digits after the first two alphabets. A sequential number is allocated to each district in a state. This is why the government has established Regional Transport Offices (RTO) in each district across the country.
3. Special Code: The third portion of the vehicle identification plate is a unique number for each vehicle. This feature distinguishes the number plate. If there are no more unique numbers to assign, the registering authority will utilize alphabets to replace the last digit. Customized car number plates cost a lot of money; thus, applicants pay a lot of money for them.
4. High Security Registration Plate: The letters ‘IND’ are inscribed in an oval symbol on the fourth half of a car number plate to indicate that the vehicle was registered in India. The oval emblem on High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) also has a chromium hologram on top of it that resembles a ‘Chakra.’ HSRP was created in 2005 to help minimize car theft.

Note :

No number is required for the Red plate with the golden emblem so there is no distinction mentioned in that.

Military vehicles have a different numbering system than civilian vehicles. The Ministry of Defense determines the number of such vehicles. A broad arrow is an arrow pointing upwards in place of the first or third digit of the number on the number plate of such trains. The first two digits following the arrow indicate the year the Army purchased the vehicle; the total number is 11 digits.
