High security number plate or HSRP number plate is a special type of Aluminium number plate for vehicles that eases identification of the vehicle. It contains a Hot-stamped Chromium-based hologram of Ashok Chakra on the top left corner of the plate. The colour of the Ashok chakra will be blue and the size of the hologram is 20 mm x 20 mm. You will see a laser printed10 digit permanent identification number or PIN on the reflecting sheet.

All Indian HSRP contains letters bearing the inscription ‘India’ at a 45-degree angle followed by a hot-stamped film that will be applied on the numerals.
So, every HSRP is unique, and once affixed to the vehicle, it will be linked automatically to the vehicle. Two or more single-use Snap-On locks will be used to affix the HSRP to the vehicle. Once the snap-on pin is used, it will be locked from both ends. Thus, your vehicle will get permanent HSRP.

Ministry of Road Transport and Highway (MORTH), under the Government of India, has announced that it is mandatory for all vehicles which have sold before 1st April 2019 to affixed with High-Security Registration Plate or HSRP and colour-coded fuel sticker. As per the public notice from the MORTH, any vehicle owner who fails to do so can be penalized under the Motor Vehicles Act 1988 & 1989.
The main purpose of these arrangements is to ensure safety, convenience and to help recognize the vehicle from far. Though HSRP was already mandatory in Delhi from 2012. But now the problems have a solution and the government has also authenticated many vehicle manufacturers to provide HSRP across the country. Is a coloured fuel sticker also required?
According to the Motor Vehicles Act, a Colored Fuel sticker is also mandatory for all two and four-wheel vehicles. The primary objective of these stickers is to make it easier to identify vehicles based on their fuel type from distance.
Vehicles that run on petrol and CNG will have light blue-coloured stickers. On the other hand, vehicles that run on diesel will have an orange sticker. These stickers will also contain details like registration number, the registering authority, a laser-branded PIN, and the engine and chassis numbers of the vehicle. They cost about ₹100 to ₹150.

It will have a uniform pattern of showing the registration number of the motor vehicle. Also, the numbers are clearly visible from a good distance.
- HSRP provides better security and authenticity as the owner has to provide details like details such as chassis number, engine number, registration number, etc. Also, the HSRP’s are affixed by state government-approved automobile dealers or private vendors. How to apply for High-Security Registration Plate or HSRP online
As per the guidelines provided by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highway, every authorized automobile manufacturer or dealer has to provide HSRP when a vehicle is bought. They will affix the plate to the vehicle and they have to stamp the allotted registration number on the plate.
For old vehicles, the process to get a High-Security Registration Plate or HSRP is a little different. You can go to your nearest state government-approved vehicle dealer to get the HSRP or you can apply online. The online process varies a little on the basis of your state. But the general process goes like this—
- First, the owner of the old vehicle will have to surrender the old number plate so it can be destroyed.
- Now visit the official website of automobile and transport as per your state.
- Find the option “Book HSRP appointment”.
- After opening the page, select your vehicle type as Private Vehicle or Commercial.
- Now choose fuel type and vehicle type like Car, two-wheeler, four-wheeler, etc.
- Now give details like brand and state.
- Next, fill in vehicle details like Registration Number, Registration Date, etc
- Now enter your personal details such as Name, Address, Contact no, etc.
- At last, you have to pay the registration fees. After successful payment, print the e-receipt.
- You will get an appointment with your nearest dealer. Be present there on the mentioned date and affix the HSRP with your vehicle.

Cost of High-Security Registration Plate or HSRP
Generally, a new High-Security Registration Plate or HSRP for a two-wheeler costs about 300 to 500 INR and for four-wheelers, it is 600 to 1100 INR. The coloured sticker roughly costs around 100 to 150 INR.
Each HSRP comes with a five-year warranty. If you see damage in your HSRP or the number of letters fades away, the dealer will give you a replacement without any further cost.
