In India, renewing a passport is officially called Re-issue of Passport, but most people say renewal. You can do this both before and after your passport expires

1. Renewal before expiry – You can apply for a passport re-issue up to one year before your passport expires. While applying for renewal you can choose Re-issue of Passport and select the reason Validity Expired/Due to Expire.

2. Renewal after expiry– Even if your passport has already expired, you can still apply for its renewal. Passport renewal processing depends on how long it’s been since your passport expired.

  • Within 3 years – Passport renewal procedure is same as normal re-issue.
  • More that 3 years – Application will be treated like a fresh passport.

In both cases, you will get new passport with new passport number and full validity (10 years for adults, 5 for minors).

Steps to renew passport online in India

Here are the steps to renew passport online:

  1. Register on the Passport Seva portal: If you are a new user, register on the Passport Seva website to create your account to renew your passport.
  2. Fill out the passport renewal application: Login to your account and fill out the application by clicking “apply for fresh passport/re-issue of passport”.
  3. Pay the application fees: Proceed with the payment through your preferred payment option. 
  4. Schedule an Appointment: Book an appointment with the nearest passport Seva Kendra for document verification.
  5. Visit Passport Seva Kendra: Visit PSK Physically on appointment day with documents required for passport renewal 
  6. Police verification: Depending on your reason for passport renewal you will have to go under police verification.
  7. Passport dispatch: If your application gets approved, it will be printed and dispatched to your address.
  8. Get your passport: Your Passport gets delivered by post at the current address.

Documents required for Passport Renewal

Indian passport holders must know the documents required for passport renewal. The documents required to renew your adult passport are the same for the normal and Tatkal application modes.

For Both Adults and Minor

  1. Old original passport

  3. Supporting document to verify Non-ECR category

  1. Booklet Size – You can choose a standard 36-page booklet or a 60-page jumbo booklet, which is useful for frequent travelers.

For minor passports, there are two categories based on age groups i.e. ‘below 15 years ‘and ‘between 15 to 18 years’. In the case of minors, only 36-page booklets can be issued by the passport authority.

Checklist for PSK visit for passport renewal

Here are the things you should know before visiting Passport Seva Kendra:

  1. The applicant must visit the passport Seva Kendra office on the scheduled date and time. 
  2. Try to reach the passport Seva Kendra office at least 15 minutes early.
  3. Carry all your essential original documents and it’s photocopy for passport renewal.
  4. Remember to bring a printout of your passport appointment receipt. If you don’t have this, you won’t be able to enter the Passport Seva Kendra.
  5. As part of the passport renewal process, applicants must visit a Passport Seva Kendra for photo and document verification. 
  6. Only the applicant is permitted to enter the Passport Seva Kendra, except for minors, who must be accompanied by a parent. 
  7. After successful document verification, the applicant’s photograph will be taken and will appear on the issued passport.

Common Mistakes to Avoid During Passport Renewal in India

  • Choosing “Fresh Passport” instead of “Re-issue of Passport.”
  • Personal details like name, date of birth, or address not matching your documents.
  • Forgetting to submit the right documents when your name, address, or marital status has changed.

  • Using an address proof that doesn’t match the address on your application exactly.
  • Booking your appointment at the wrong PSK/POPSK for your area.

Police Verification for Passport Renewal

Police verification is required for passport renewal under the normal scheme. Once the passport renewal documents are verified at the Passport Seva Kendra, the local police station will conduct address verification at all addresses where the applicant has lived in the past year. For passport renewal under the Tatkal scheme, police verification is done after the renewed passport is issued.
