Best Time to Visit Thailand

Planning a trip to Thailand? The country experiences three major seasons in Thailand, just like it has become in India: winter, summer, and monsoon. Thailand has a tropical climate . Thailand attracts tourists for its beaches, rich cultural heritage, spas, delicious Thai food, and lively nightlife. If you are planning to visit Thailand, it’s important to understand the best time to visit Thailand . This blog will serve as a window to help you decide when you should visit Thailand; the worst time to visit Thailand, and the best months to visit Thailand.

Best months to visit Thailand

Here’s a breakdown of the best months depending on your travel plans

Summer (March-July)

Summer is harsh and sultry, just like India. The average temperature range around 33 and 34 degrees Celsius. The weather is dry, and the evenings are muggy. The days are bright and hot. The summer months see a lot of students and backpackers.

You can celebrate Thai-style Holi with water guns and gulal. The festival is called Songkran. Many cultural functions and processions happen during this time. You can enjoy the Fruit Festival during May and the Jazz festival too.

The tourist footfall is very low and hotels offer great discounts. This season is considered the low season or off-season for Thailand.

Monsoon (July-October)

Monsoon is a shoulder season as it receives heavy rainfall with very humid weather. It just rains non-stop for 4 months during these months, like Mumbai. The average temperature ranges around 29 and 33 degrees Celsius. If you love rain or enjoy watching the beaches in the downpour, you can try visiting in Monsoon.

The only holidays observed during these months are King Maha Vajiralongkorn’s birthday on July 28 and Queen Sirikit’s birthday on August 12, which is also known as Mother’s Day in Thailand. These days, cultural performances, candlelight ceremonies, and occasionally even fireworks bring the nation to life. The tourists’ crowds are few, and you get great deals if you can wish to visit in the rainfall.

Winter (November-February)

The most popular time to visit timeline, weather-wise, is during winter. The sun is not sultry, which means you can easily go on day trips. You can go for sightseeing or relax at beaches. It is cool and pleasant, just like spring in India, during Thai winters. The average temperatures range around 32 and 18 degrees Celsius. The nights are cold as you head towards the mountainous regions up north.

The only festivals during this time are Christmas, New Year and the King’s birthday, Chinese New Year. All these festivals are celebrated with great fanfare and revelry, especially in the streets of Bangkok.

Sightseeing and Exploration

The best month for sightseeing and exploration is winter. You can go for day trips in Bangkok and Phuket or enjoy the lively streets of Bangkok’s nightlife. You can enjoy the Thai food. So, embark on a journey to Thailand during the months of November to February. In the evenings, you can go to the street markets or boutiques for souvenir shopping.

Beach Holiday

You should go on a beach vacation in Thailand in winter not summer. The weather in winter is just perfect to bask under the sun; go for water sports; try out seafood outlets. The sun is neither too hot nor the weather is too cold. This is the ideal time for a relaxing solo or family vacation.

Adventure/Sports (Trekking)

You can explore the waterfall or the mountains in Chiang Mai during winter. It is just excellent for trekking, hiking or cycling or other outdoor activities. Again, you can go enjoy the lively and vibrant nightlife complete with spas in Bangkok in the evenings. You can enjoy water sports like river rafting or swimming in the Thai beaches.

Festivals

You should visit Thailand during winter for its festivals, carnivals and procession. I am listing out all the festivals that happen during the time of winter. The November festival is Loy Krathong (Festival of Lights). In December and January, they celebrate Christmas, New Year and the King’s birthday, Chinese New Year. In February, they have Makha Bucha Day, Chiang Mai Flower Festival. Again, if you stay till March, you can enjoy Thai-style Holi called Songkram.

Budget Travel

If you are planning your trip under a tight budget, you can still experience Thailand nicely. You can get the best deals on flights and accommodations in summer and winter: March to October. The tourist crowds are less, although you can find students and backpackers during summer. It’s advisable to check the weather conditions to get a good experience of your Thai trip.

Worst time to visit Thailand

The worst time to travel to Thailand is summer and monsoon. Let’s understand why:

Monsoon: This season sees tremendous rainfall. Although, it is a shoulder season, it is best to totally go to some other place. Thailand’s weather is soggy; humid which is not good for outdoor activities or sightseeing. You cannot enjoy day trips or beach vacation with the heavy rainfall. It is therefore advisable to not come to Thailand during Monsoon unless you are travelling on a very tight budget.

Summer: The weather in Thailand and India during summer months is exactly same. It is very hot with sultry weather. The unbearable heat is a bad idea for sightseeing and day trips. You can however go for beach vacation. The evenings are humid, and you cannot enjoy going out too. There is a feeling of unrest and discomfort all the time.
