When you buy or sell used car, or move it to another state, you need to transfer the RC. The process of ownership transfer is little different depending on whether you are transferring within the same state or to another state. Each case requires different forms, documents and fees. Before you start, it is important to know the requirements and transfer procedures for both case.
How to transfer RC within the state?
RC transfer within same state is a simple process. It is required when used car is bought or sold within the state. The RC must be updated at the RTO so the car is officially registered in the new owner’s name.
How to transfer RC online within a state online
Here is how to transfer RC of car online:
- Go to the parivahan.gov.in
- Click on the online services and click on the tab of vehicle-related services.
- Enter your vehicle registration number.
- After that click on the RC transfer option.
- Fill in the required details
- Verify using the OTP sent to your mobile number
- Pay the RC transfer fee online
- Download and print the payment receipt
After completing the online process, visit the RTO with all required documents for verification.
Process of transfer of RC of the car within a state offline
If you prefer the offline method, RC transfer can be done in three steps.
Step 1: Sale Agreement at Notary
The buyer and seller visit notary office to make a sale agreement. The notary writes down details like payment method and the condition of the vehicle. The seller signs the documents only after receiving full payment.
Step 2: Apply for Clearance Certificate
All required documents are checked and submitted at the RTO. This process usually takes up to 30 days. The buyer receives the Clearance Certificate by post. There is no fee for this step.
Step 3: Apply for ownership transfer
After submitting all documents, the RTO updates the RC. The RC ownership transfer is completed within 30 days.

RC transfer of vehicle from one state to another is more complicated than transferring it within the same state. This is because the vehicle’s record have to be moved from the old RTO to the new state RTO, and the road tax must also be recalculated and adjusted. You need to transfer your RC if:
- You permanently move your car to another state
- You sell your vehicle to someone living in another state

- Apply for NOC at the original RTO where the car is registered.
- After receiving the NOC, submit the required documents to the new state RTO for re registration. The RTO will issue new registration number and smart card RC.
- You can then apply for road tax refund from the original RTO. The refund process may take up to 6 months.
