Hindu Marriage Act, 1955

Special Marriage Act, 1954

Thirty-day prior notice is required. Three witnesses are required. No religious ceremony is required. Registration is done by Marriage Officer appointed under this Act.

Indian Christian Marriage Act, 1872

Indian Christian Marriage Act applies when one or both partners are Christian. Marriage is performed by Priest or Minister. Marriage details are sent to Registrar for issuance of certificate.

Muslim Marriage Registration (Nikahnama)

Muslim marriage is governed by Muslim Personal Law. Marriage (Nikah) is civil contract. Nikahnama is written marriage contract. Registration rules differ by state. In many states, Nikahnama must be registered with local authority.
