Vehicle registration in Tamil Nadu is a mandatory process under Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. Every new vehicle must get permanent Registration Certificate. You can apply for vehicle registration at local RTO. Vehicle owner must get permanent registration certificate from local RTO within 30 days of temporary registration. All motor vehicles in India must be registered under Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. Each vehicle receives unique registration number based on state code. Tamil Nadu uses TN RTO registration system. After registration, vehicle owner receives Registration Certificate.

Tamil Nadu RTO handles services such as vehicle registration, transfer of registration, re-registration, issue or cancellation of No Objection Certificate, hire-purchase entry or termination and transfer of vehicle ownership.

Documents for Tamil Nadu vehicle registration

Vehicle owner must carry following documents for Tamil Nadu RTO registration:

  1. Application Form-20
  2. Form-21: Sales certificate
  3. Form 22 – Manufacturer road-worthiness certificate
  4. Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate
  5. Form-60/61 from the Income Tax Department or Pan card
  6. Vehicle Insurance Certificate
  7. Address proof (one of the following):
    • Ration Card
    • Voter ID Card
    • LIC Policy
  8. Affidavit by applicant attested by a Notary, Executive or First-Class Judicial Magistrate
  9. 3 copies of passport size photos for Tamil Nadu vehicle registration details
  10. Lifetime road tax receipt for non-transport vehicle
  11. Temporary registration certificate, if vehicle has temporary registration

Procedure for temporary Tamil Nadu vehicle registration

Vehicle owner can get temporary registration from registering authority in Tamil Nadu. Dealer apply for temporary registration on behalf of the vehicle owner. Submit the application to the Regional Transport Officer (RTO) or Motor Vehicle Inspector Grade I. Temporary registration is valid for 1 month only. It cannot be renewed after expiry. Vehicle owner must present vehicle for inspection. Registering authority checks the vehicle details. Process takes about 3 days.

Procedure for Permanent Vehicle Registration in Tamil Nadu

The procedure for permanent Tamil Nadu RTO registration of non-commercial vehicles is as follows:

  1. Get Form 20 (download online or collect from RTO). Fill it with vehicle details.
  2. Attach required documents – Submit dealer’s/sales certificate, manufacturer’s road‑worthiness certificate, attested copy of vehicle insurance, proof of address, original print of chassis number and any other documents asked by RTO
  3. Pay registration fee and one-time road tax to Transport Department.
  4. After vehicle inspection by registering authority, RTO assigns permanent registration number.

Change the address in Tamil Nadu vehicle registration details

You have to record change in vehicle owner’s address in Registration Certificate, which they must request from Regional Transport Officer/ Motor Vehicle Inspector Grade I. List of documents required for change of address in vehicle RC are:

  1. Change of address notification in duplicate on Form No. 33.Download the forms through this link.
  2. Certificate of Registration for a Vehicle
  3. Insurance policy for a vehicle
  4. Proof of address (one of the following): Voter ID Card Ration Card Life Insurance Policy
  5. Photos that fit in passport
  6. Salary slips from government agency
  7. Affidavit signed by applicant and witnessed by Notary, Executive or First-Class Judicial Magistrate.
  8. No Objection Certificate from financier, if vehicle is under loan
  9. Valid tax receipt
  10. Certificate of Pollution Control (PUC)

Process to get duplicate registration certificate in Tamil Nadu

If you lose registration certificate of vehicle, you have apply at RTO or meet Motor Vehicle Inspector (Grade I) to get duplicate.

  3. Tax payment details of last four quarters
  4. Tax token
  5. Vehicle Insurance Certificate

Time Period to Renew registration certificate of Two-wheeler

Tamil Nadu RTO issues two wheeler registration certificate with validity of 15 years from registration date. Vehicle owner should renew registration certificate after expiry. Owner must submit required documents and show two-wheeler for inspection. You have to apply for RC renewal within 60 days of expiry of the original vehicle RC according to Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989.
