Traffic fines are issued when traffic rules are violated. eChallan is traffic fine generated digitally through Parivahan system, CCTV cameras, or handheld devices used by traffic police. If you have broken any traffic rules, you can check and pay challans online. In this blog, we will discuss how to check traffic fines.

Traffic Fine

Traffic rules in India are governed by the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988. As per amendment made in 2019, state governments have power to make traffic rules and decide fine amounts. Central government remains main authority. Most traffic fines are issued and collected by Regional Transport Authority (RTA) or traffic police. Traffic rules help control road discipline and traffic fines help enforce law and make citizens aware of rules.

What is eChallan?

Today, most fines are issued digitally as eChallan. This means:

  • You don’t need to wait for paper slip.
  • Fine is recorded online.
  • You can pay it directly through official websites or apps.

Point to be noted in this whole procedure

  • Always take a copy of all the documents that were used during procedure, like payment receipt and e-challan receipt.
  • If driver is under influence of liquor or narcotic substance, challan is usually handed over on spot.
  • If challan payment is delayed for more than 60 days from issue date, challan may be sent to court and can create trouble for driver.
  • In some states, challan is sent to home by speed post at end of every month. Sometimes delivery gets delayed, so check challan status regularly.
  • Police force has to issue notice to driver before taking him to court in case of late payment of challan.
  • If any authority asks to pay challan through personal UPI ID or bank account, do not pay. This is corruption. Official options are online portal, offline payment, or notice with challan details. You can pay it offline or authority will issue notice with challan option.
  • Penalty is not just paid in the form of money it can be in the form of imprisonment also.

Amount of penalty depends on type of traffic rule violation. Like, driving without valid insurance can lead to ₹2000 fine or up to 3 months jail and for repeat offence ₹4000 fine or up to 3 months jail.
