Tatkal Passport
Planning for an overseas trip? Don’t have a passport? To go on a sudden trip or for important work abroad and not having the passport can cause a lot of trouble and chaos in the planning. But this problem could be solved out to some extent by the Tatkal Scheme under the Passport Authority of India. Giving a certain amount can speed up the process of your application for Tatkal Passport. Applying for a Tatkal passport is similar to applying for a normal passport. Read all the things you need to go through for a Tatkal Passport. A Tatkal passport application is filled and processed on the same day and within three to seven working days, your passport is delivered. Although, the paperwork and requirements are a bit more as compared to a normal passport because you are issued a passport at the earliest.
The documents required for Tatkal application are as follows:-
- Register yourself at the official portal of Passport Seva.
- Every individual will be given a unique ID and password. Login with your ID and password.
- Select options of Apply of Fresh or Re-issue, as applicable in your case.
- Select a Tatkal option in the scheme type.
- Download the application form and fill the form.
- Submit the filled in form onlineand complete the payment procedure.
- Print out the receipt of online payment.
- Book an appointment at the nearest Passport Service Kendra (PSK)
- Visit your RPO or Passport Seva Kendra as per fixed appointment with print out of receipt. Also carry all documents in original and self-attested photo copies.
The Documents Required for Tatkal Passport

Aadhaar Card or e-Aadhaar containing the 12-digit Aadhaar number issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI)
Student Photo Identity Cards issued by Government Recognized Educational Institutions in respect of full-time courses.
Birth Certificates issued under the RBD Act.
Rations Card.
Address proof - One of the following documents can be submitted as address proof for Passport.
- Water bill, Electricity bill, Gas Bill, Rent Agreement, Telephone bill.
- Aadhaar card/E-Aadhaar card.
- Details of the first page of the Passbook of current Bank Account (Scheduled Public Sector Banks, Scheduled Private Sector Indian Banks, and Regional Rural Banks only). If minor has an account then his/her, otherwise any of the parent.
Proof of present address: Any document from the below-listed documents.
- Transfer/School leaving/Matriculation Certificate issued by the school last attended/recognized educational board.
- Aadhaar Card/E-Aadhaar.
- A declaration was given by the Head of the Orphanage/Child Care Home on their official letterhead of the organization confirming the DOB of the applicant
- Affidavit as per Annexure E.
- Spouse's passport copy (First and last page including family details mentioning applicant's name as the spouse of the passport holder), (provided the applicant's present address matches the address mentioned in the spouse's passport).
- Parent's passport copy (First and last page).
- Documentary proof of the Non-ECR category.
- Any three documents from the below listed documents for Passport issuance.
- Aadhaar Card or e-Aadhaar containing the 12-digit Aadhaar number issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI)
- Service Photo Identity Card issued by State/Central Government, Public Sector Undertakings, local bodies or Public Limited Companies.
- Birth Certificates issued under the RBD Act.
- Rations Card.
- Income Tax Identity (PAN) Card.
- In the case of students, Student Photo Identity Card issued by Government Recognized Educational Institutions in respect of full-time courses.
- Driving License.
- Water bill, Electricity bill, Gas Bill, Rent Agreement, Telephone bill.
- Aadhaar card/E-Aadhaar card.

- Birth Certificate issued by the Registrar of Births and Deaths or the Municipal Corporation or any other prescribed authority, whosoever has been empowered under the Registration of Birth and Deaths Act, 1969 to register the birth of a child born in India.
- Transfer/School leaving/Matriculation Certificate issued by the school last attended/recognized educational board.
- A declaration was given by the Head of the Orphanage/Child Care Home on their official letterhead of the organization confirming the DOB of the applicant.
- Election Photo Identity Card (EPIC) issued by the Election Commission of India.
- PAN Card issued by the Income Tax Department.
- Driving License issued by the Transport Department of concerned State Government.
- Affidavit as per Annexure E.
- Documentary proof of the Non-ECR category.
- Old Passport in original with self-attested photocopy of its first two and last two pages, including ECR/Non-ECR page (previously ECNR) and the page of observation (if any), made by Passport Issuing Authority and validity extension page, if any, in respect of short validity passport.
- A declaration affirming the particulars furnished in the application about the minor as per Annexure D (one parent not given consent).
- Old Passport in original with self-attested photocopy of its first two and last two pages, including ECR/Non-ECR page (previously ECNR) and the page of observation (if any), made by Passport Issuing Authority and validity extension page, if any, in respect of short validity passport.
- Aadhaar Card/e-Aadhaar containing the 12-digit Aadhaar number issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI).
- Student Photo Identity Cards issued by Government Recognized Educational Institutions in respect of full-time courses.

Time Taken in Tatkal Passport
- You may get the passport in no less than 3 working days and you may mention the no. of days in which you want without producing any proof of the urgency. Application falling under this scheme is fast forward so that the applicant not only gets an early appointment but also quick processing through a separate queue.
- As the norms set by the Government of India, police verification for an Indian applicant is must and you cannot avoid that. But yes, there is a window to carry out the police verification before or after issuing the passport which is basically decided by the concerned passport officer.
- If the police verification is not done then the passport will be dispatched within 1 working day of the application being submitted and in case of police verification is done it usually takes around 2-3 days and on the third day after the submission of your application, your passport is dispatched.
Eligibility for Tatkal Passport
Usually, the concerned passport office has the final say for the issuance of passport under the Tatkal scheme. This is then further dependent on the urgency with a couple of other factors. The only thing one needs to keep in mind is that not everyone is eligible to apply under the tatkal scheme. Below are the mentioned categories under which you may not be issued a Tatkal Passport:
- An applicant who has been granted Indian citizenship via naturalism or registration.
- Citizen born to Indian parents outside India.
- If an applicant is deported to India from some other country.
- An applicant who has been sent back to his own country from some other country at the cost of Government of India.
- An applicant who has gone major name change.
- An applicant who is a resident of Jammu and Kashmir or Nagaland.
- An Indian citizen of Naga origin residing outside Nagaland.
- An adopted child by Indian and Foreign parents.
- A minor child with a single parent.
- An applicant who is a minor and is residing in Nagaland.
- An applicant seeking renewal for a short validity passport.
- An applicant whose current passport is damaged or is seeking a fresh passport after the older one was lost or stolen.
- An applicant who has changed either sex or appearance.
- An applicant whose signature has changed or any other credentials might have changed.
How to Apply for a Tatkal Passport
The steps are similar as for a normal passport application. Below are the mentioned steps:
- Visit the Passport Seva Website. If you are a new user click on Register Now and if you are a registered customer then follow the next step.
- Enter your login ID and password to log in to the passport portal.
- Next, choose between Fresh and Re-issue of Passport.
- Next, select the Tatkal option.
- Fill all the required fields and check the application before submitting (Make sure to enter the information same as that mentioned in your documents).
- After this upload the self-attested copy of your supporting documents.
- Next step is to schedule an appointment and this is done by clicking on the Pay and Schedule Appointment option. You may find this under View Saved/Submitted Applications.
- Click on Print Application Receipt. Take the print out of the application form and note down the Application Reference Number (ARN). Without this, you won’t be allowed to enter the Passport Seva Kendra.
- Next is to visit the Passport Seva Kendra where you booked your appointment and the slot on the respective time and date.
Don’t forget to carry all your original documents with you. Take out the print of your application form.
Fees for Tatkal Passport
As Tatkal passport is issued in less time, therefore, you have to pay the passport authorities a little extra. The fee amount for a 36-page passport booklet is 1500 rupees in a normal mode but for Tatkal it is slightly extra depending upon the type of passport.
