Driving Licence in India  is necessary to drive vehicle on Indian Roads . It is issued by the Regional Transport Office ( RTO) , in  the jurisdiction of which applicant lives.  Person should be minimum 18 years old to apply for driving license.

Driving License is issued for 4 categories of vehicles :

  1. Non Gear Motorcycle
  2. Motor cycle with gear
  3. Light motor vehicle (LMV)
  4. Heavy motor vehicle (HMV)

The validity of the driving license is 20 years or the till the attainment of the age of 50 years. Driving  License can be renewed after expiry of it.

Application for Driving License is two stage process :

  1. Learning driving license
  2. Permanent driving license

First Learning License is issued . After one month of learning license issued , permanent  license can be applied for .

Learning License

In the process for getting driving license , First Learning Driving License is issued. Upon submission of application form along with supporting documents , applicant has to undergo  a computer based theory test .

Computer based test consists of ten multiple choice objective type questions . Applicant has to correctly answer minimum six questions to clear test.

After successful clearance of the test , learning driving license is issued. The Validity of the learning driving license is six months. Applicant can apply for permanent driving license after one month of learning license issued date and before six month or the expiry of the driving license.

Permanent Driving License

Permanent Driving License can be applied after one month from the date of issue of learning license.

During permanent Driving License procedure , applicant has to undergo practical test, i.e. he/ she has to show driving skill on wheels.

If passed successfully applicant will be issued Driving License.

International Driving License

To drive vehicle in foreign country, Indian driving license alone is not sufficient .  Along with Indian Driving License,  international Driving License or international driving permit is required.

International driving license is issued by the RTO from which driving license is issued.  Physical presence of applicant in the RTO is mandatory . Validity of international driving license is one year.

Driving License for foreigners in India

In India, foreigners too can apply for Driving License . Its validity period is one year.

Its two stage process . First Learning Driving License is made . After 30 days Permanent driving license is made .

Learning Driving License for foreigners

First stage of getting driving license is , application for learning driving license . After submission of application form along with supporting documents , appointment is being given for test .

Commercial Driving License

To drive heavy vehicle in India , commercial driving license is required.

Eligibility condition for commercial driving license

  1. 1 year of Driving experience ( should have valid Indian driving license more than 1 year old
  2. Minimum age of 21 years
  3. Applicant should be minimum 8th passed

Process for commercial driving license

Minimum 30 days is required to get commercial driving license . Its 2 stage process .

First learning license will be made . After 1 month of issue of learning driving license, permanent driving license is issued.

Learning License

First stage of commercial driving license process is  learning driving license. Application has to be submitted along with supporting documents . If all the documents are OK as per the requirement , there will be computer based theory test.

Theory test consists of 10 questions . Its multiple choice type objective question .

To clear test , one must answer minimum 6 questions correctly.

Upon successfully clearing of the test , learning commercial driving license is issued.

The validity of the learning driving license is 6 months . One must apply for permanent commercial driving license before expiry of this . Also, it can be applied for only after 30 days from the date of issue of learning license

Permanent License

Application for permanent license can be submitted, after 30 days of issue of learning license. During permanent license process there will be practical test and applicant will have to show his/her driving skill driving heavy vehicle.

  2. Copy of educational certificate

Driving Licence Renewal

Validity of Driving licence is 20 years or till  the attainment of the age  of 50 years which ever happens earlier. Renewal of driving licence is required after  expiry of  it .

After 50 years , drive licence need to be renewed every  5 years .

Driving licence can be renewed not less than one month before the expiry of it and can not be renewed after 5  years from the date of expiry.  There is late fine of Rs. 1000 per year from the date of expiry  if application for renewal of driving licence is submitted late.

There is grace period of 30 days from the date of expiry of driving licence    . During this period there  is no late fine.

  4. Medical certificate if age crossed 50 years

Duplicate driving licence

In case of loss , theft or mutilation of driving licence , duplicate driving licence can be applied. Application for duplicate driving licence is to be submitted in the same RTO from where driving licence was issued originally.

Validity and other particulars in the duplicate driving licence remains same as in the original driving licence.
