Process of Tatkal Passport

The process of Tatkal passport is not completely online. You can start the tatkal passport process online but you need to visit the Passport Seva Kendra to complete it.  

Apply Online for Tatkal passport

  • First, visit the  Passport Seva Portal
  • Register as a ‘New User’ or log in as an ‘Existing User’.
  • Click on “Apply for Fresh Passport / Re-issue of Passport.”
  • Select the “Tatkal” option while filling out the application form.
  • Complete the form and submit it online.

The next step in the tatkal passport process is scheduling an appointment.

Tatkal Passport Appointment Process

  • Go to “View Saved/Submitted Applications.”
  • Click on “Pay and Schedule Appointment.”
  • Select a suitable date and time slot at your nearest Passport Seva Kendra (PSK).
  • Pay the applicable Tatkal passport fee.

Visit the PSK for Document Verification & Biometrics

For the further process of tatkal passport follow these steps : –

  • On the day of your appointment:
  • Carry original documents along with self-attested photocopies of each.
  • Bring appointment details, either in the form of an SMS confirmation or a printed application receipt.
  • Submit your documents at the designated counter.
  • Your biometrics (fingerprints and photograph) will be captured electronically.
  • Once done, you will receive a final receipt with your application number, which you can use to track your Tatkal passport status.

Note:

  • Tatkal passport processing is usually faster, and you may receive your passport within 1–3 working days, depending on police verification and document submission.
  • Police verification can happen before or after passport issuance, depending on your case.

Who Can Apply for Tatkal Passport?

The Tatkal facility is meant for genuine urgent cases, but not everyone qualifies. The final decision always rests with the Passport Officer, based on the documents and information you provide.

  • Applicants who need reissue because their passport is expired, has no blank pages left, or requires updates like removal of ECR status.
  • Parents applying for a minor’s passport.
  • Those replacing a lost, damaged, or stolen passport

Who cannot apply for tatkal passport

People who don’t qualify for the Tatkal scheme will need to apply through the normal passport process:

  • Those who received Indian citizenship through registration or naturalisation.
  • Individuals born abroad to Indian parents.
  • Applicants needing major updates like change of name, date of birth, or place of birth.
  • Anyone whose current address falls outside the jurisdiction of their RPO.
  • Persons with a pending criminal case or unfavorable police report.
  • Individuals repatriated from another country at the government’s expense.
  • Those who were deported to India or previously traveled using an Emergency Certificate.

Tatkal Passport Documents Required

If you want to apply for a passport, you must have the necessary documents in order to proceed with the process of tatkal passport. The documents required for the Tatkal passport application process depend on your age.

If you are 18+ applying for a Tatkal passport, you need to submit:

  1. Address Proof, 
  2. Date of Birth Proof,
  3. Non-ECR (if applicable) +
  • Any 3 of these:
    • Aadhaar card 
    • PAN card
    • Student ID card 
    • Birth certificate
    • Ration card (latest or updated)
    • Voter ID card
    • Driving license (valid and in same state as application)
    • Bank/Kisan/Post office passbook (with photo and latest transaction)
    • Caste certificate (SC/ST/OBC)
    • Arms license
    • Pension documents (military, government, etc.)
    • Government/PSU/public body/company ID card

If you are below 18 applying for a Tatkal passport need to submit:

  1. Proof of address
  2. Birth Proof,
  3. non-ECR (if applicable) +
  • Any 2 of these documents:
    • Aadhaar card 
    • PAN card
    • Student ID card 
    • Birth certificate
    • Ration card (latest or updated)

Recent Update:

As per the latest rules

  • Birth Certificate is mandatory for applicants born on or after October 1, 2023. It must be issued by the Municipal Corporation, Registrar of Births and Deaths, or any other authorized authority.
  • For applicants born before October 1, 2023, you can submit any one of the following documents as valid proof of date of birth:
    • Birth Certificate
    • School Leaving Certificate / Secondary School Certificate
    • PAN Card
    • Driving Licence
    • Voter ID
    • LIC Policy Document
    • Service Record of the Government (for government employees)
    • Pension Order (for retired government employees)

How Much Tatkaal Passport Process Cost?

When applying for a Tatkal passport in India, you’ll need to pay the required fees, which vary depending on the type of application. Here’s a breakdown of the Tatkal passport fees:

Police Verification For Tatkal Passport Process

One major difference between the Tatkal and normal passport process is in how the Police Verification is done.

  • In tatkal applications, the passport is issued on a post-police verification basis. This means your verification happens after the passport has already been printed and dispatched.
  • Since the verification happens later, you don’t need to wait for the police report to reach the Passport Office. Once your documents are checked and approved at the PSK, your passport can be sent out quickly

Tatkal Passport Renewal

The Tatkal passport renewal process is similar to the new Tatkal passport process. If your passport is damaged but still readable, you can apply for a reissue through the Tatkal scheme. But, if your passport is severely damaged and unreadable, you cannot apply for a new passport under this scheme.
