Want to get your driving license in India? If you are 18 years or older, you are eligible for driving license. But how do you apply for DL in India? There are two ways to apply for a driving license in India
- Online – Apply through the Parivahan portal or you can apply with Itzeazy
- Offline – You need to go to RTO or DTO
There are two step processes for driving license. You will get a learning license first. After that, you can apply for Driving License
Types of Driving License
Types of driving license depend on
- How big the engine is
- What is the weight of your vehicle
- What is the purpose of driving
There are mainly 3 types of driving license that you can choose from.
Motorcycle Licenses
- For bikes without gear (MCWOG)
- Bikes with gear (MCWG)
- For adapted motorcycles
Light Motor Vehicle Licenses
- For regular cars and small vehicles (LMV)
- Electric rickshaws (E-Rickshaw)
- For electric carts (E-cart)
- For adapted light vehicles
Commercial Vehicle Licenses
- Medium to heavy vehicles like trucks and buses
- For vehicles used to transport goods or passengers
Eligibility Criteria for Driving License
Eligibility age depends on the type of vehicle you want to drive. So, just make sure you reach to the age criteria that’s require for different types of driving license.
Two Wheelers (Motorcycles/Scooters under 55cc engine)
- You need to be at least 16 years old
- But your parent or guardian needs to give a written declaration
Cars/Jeeps/Vans (Non-commercial light motor vehicles)
- For any non commercial vehicles like car, you need to be at least 18 years old
Heavy Vehicles Like Trucks/Buses (Commercial transport vehicles)
- To drive heavy vehicles minimum age should be at least 20 years old
Documents required for driving licence
Before applying for driver’s licence we would highly recommend you to scan your document of address and age proof, scan your passport size photograph and signature
Documents needed for the application of driver’s licence
- Address proof
- Date of birth proof
- Passport size photograph
- ID proof
Proof of Address required for Driving licence
- Permanent proof of address: (anyone of the following document is required)
- Passport
- Aadhaar
- Self-owned house agreement
- Electricity bill (issued in applicants name)
- LIC bond
- Voters ID
- Ration card
- Current Proof of Address (any one from the following):
- Rental agreement and electricity bill/LPG Bill

Other Requirements
- Duly filled application form (to get the application form for a driver’s licence, visit the nearest RTO or download it from the online portal for your state form4a)
- Application fees: If you are staying in other cities, as current address proof, you can present the rental agreement with one recent utility bill copy which can be a gas bill or an electricity bill.
- Medical Certificate is mandatory for all applicants over the age of 40 years.
- A certified government doctor can issue a medical certificate by Form 1 A and 1.

How to apply for driving licence in India?
There are two main stages for applying license in India:
- Getting a learning license and
- Then apply for a permanent driving license.
How to apply for learning license
- First, go to the Parivahan Portal
- Click on Drivers/ Learners License
- And then you have to choose your state from the drop down
- Click on “Application for New Learner’s License”
- Fill out the learner’s license application form
- Click “Next” to proceed further
- Visit the Road Transport Office (RTO) on the scheduled date. Carry your original documents and the fee receipt.
How to apply for driving license after you get learning license
You will need your learning license – the one you got earlier to apply for your permanent driving license.
Make sure you have your learning license for at least 30 days. On your test day, bring the vehicle type you applied for (e.g., car, scooter). The RTO examiner will assess your driving skills and ability to perform different maneuvers as per traffic rules. You have to pay the required fees before the test
- Visit the Parivahan Sewa website
- Go to Online Services > Driving License > Select your state > Click “Apply for New License”
- Fill the application form. Upload documents (JPEGs/PDFs under 300KB, no spaces/special characters in filenames) and pay the fee. Note your application number
- Book your test slot – pick date & time. Get test confirmation details
- Visit the RTO for the test with original docs & receipt. Take the driving test
- If you will pass, you will get your license
- License will be posted & you can download it too
Note: You can’t edit submitted form. So you have to cancel & re-apply for it in case of any mistakes. You can directly cancel your driving licence application through the online portal.
Validity
Younger people get longer validity, but it reduced as you grow older. The driving license validity period in India for private vehicles (cars, motorcycles, etc.) are initially for 20 years
Private Vehicle License Validity:
- Initial 20 years or till you turn 40, whichever is earlier
- After 40, valid for 10 years
- After that, renewed every 5 years
Non-Transport Vehicle License Validity:
Conclusion
Although, the procedure is simple whether you choose offline or online mode. Make sure you have all the required documents ready. The fees are reasonable, and the validity period depends on your age at the time of issue or renewal.
