For minor passports, there are two categories based on age groups i.e. ‘below 15 years ‘and ‘between 15 to 18 years’. In the case of minors, only 36-page booklets can be issued by the passport authority.

Step-by-Step Guide to the Passport Renewal Process in India

The passport renewal application is done using the Passport India website, as part of the overall passport renewal process. Here is the step-by-step procedure to renew your passport online:

1. Visit the Passport Seva website.

2. Register if you are a new user.

3. After the registration process, log in to the website by clicking on “Existing User Login”.

4. click “Apply for fresh passport/ Re-issue of passport” in the application home.

5. You will have two options:  (1)Fill the form online or (2). Print the form, fill it out, and upload it.

6.. To fill the form online, click on the link “Click here to fill the application form online” under alternative 1.

7. A new page named “RPO selection” will be opened and the state and district under RPO selection.

8. In the passport type, select the “Re-issue of Passport” option and state the reason for it.

9. Choose whether you want the application in “tatkal” or “normal” mode, and specify the number of pages required.

10. Click “Next” to proceed.

11. Fill in the accurate application details, family details, residential address, emergency contact, previous passport, and other required information.

12. After filling in all the details, a summary of the information will be displayed. Cross-check the information for accuracy.

13. Fill out the “self-declaration” and then submit the form.

14. If required, download the application receipt for personal records.

After filling out the above application form, fees for passport renewal have to be paid, and schedule an appointment. To schedule an appointment:

15. Click on “View Saved and Submitted Application” > “Pay and Schedule Appointment.”

16. Choose the payment mode and click “Next.”

17. In the schedule appointment section, verify your details and click “Next.”

18. Enter your location and fill in the captcha code.

19. Select the appointment date and then click “Pay and Book Appointment.”

20. Proceed with the payment through your preferred payment option.

22. Police verification/ address verification starts

23. You will get the passport by post according to a given address.

Passport renewal processing time in India

There are two types of application schemes available for the passport renewal process in India, through Normal and Tatkal:

Passport Seva Kendra Visit for Renewal

On the day and time of the scheduled appointment, the applicant must go to the passport Seva Kendra office. There are no exceptions or exemptions to this Indian passport renewal process, which requires a physical visit to a passport Seva Kendra. Arrive at the passport Seva Kendra office at least 15 minutes early.

Originals of all passport renewal documents, as well as one photocopy of each, should be carried. While original documents are verified and returned, the passport office retains one set of photocopies of each document.

Remember to bring a printout of your passport appointment receipt. If you don’t have this, you won’t be able to enter the Passport Seva Kendra.

As part of the passport renewal process, applicants must visit a Passport Seva Kendra for photo and document verification. Only the applicant is permitted to enter the Passport Seva Kendra, except for minors, who must be accompanied by a parent. After successful document verification, the applicant’s photograph will be taken and will appear on the issued passport.

The applicant will receive one acknowledgment slip after the process is completed successfully. The next step will be police address verification.

Police Verification for Passport Renewal

Police verification is required for passport renewal under the normal scheme. Once the passport renewal documents are verified at the Passport Seva Kendra, the local police station will conduct address verification at all addresses where the applicant has lived in the past year. For passport renewal under the Tatkal scheme, police verification is done after the renewed passport is issued.
