Passport renewal process in India is officially called “Re-issue of Passport.” You can apply for re-issue when your passport is about to expire, has already expired, has no blank pages left, or you need to change personal details. The application is submitted online through Passport Seva. After applying, you need to pay the required fee and book an appointment at a Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK). At the appointment, your documents and biometric details are checked.
Passport renewal vs Passport re-issue
In India, passport renewal process is officially called reissue of passport, but most people call it renewal. You can apply before or after your passport expires.
1. Renewal before expiry – You can apply for a passport re-issue up to one year before your passport expires. While applying for renewal you can choose Re-issue of Passport and select the reason Validity expired/due to Expire.
2. Renewal after expiry– If your passport’s validity has already expired, you can still apply for its renewal. Passport renewal process depends on how long it’s been since your passport expired.
- Within 3 years – Passport renewal procedure is same as normal re-issue.
- More that 3 years – Application will be treated like fresh passport.
In both cases, you will get new passport with new passport number and full validity (10 years for adults, 5 for minors).
When can I renew my passport?
If your passport is due to expire, you can apply for re-issue before expiry. Passport Seva’s application guidance includes re-issue for a passport whose validity has expired within three years or is due to expire within the permitted period.
If your passport expired more than three years ago, the application falls under a different document requirement category, so do not assume that it will follow exactly the same process as a recently expired passport.

You can complete the application and payment online, but passport renewal is not completely online. You normally need to visit a PSK or POPSK for document verification and biometrics.
1. Check why your passport needs re-issue
Before you start passport renewal application, identify the reason for re-issue.

2. Register or log in to Passport Seva
Go to the official Passport Seva portal and create an account if you do not already have one.
If you already have an account, log in with your registered credentials.
3. Select “Re-issue of Passport”
After logging in, select “Fresh Passport / Re-issue of Passport.” Then choose “Re-issue of Passport.”
Select the reason that applies to your case. Options may include:
- Passport expired or due to expire
- Exhaustion of passport pages
- Change in personal details
- Damaged passport
- Lost or stolen passport
Passport Seva has separate requirements for fresh passport and re-issue applications.
4. Fill the passport re-issue application form
Enter your personal details, address and other information carefully.
Use the same spelling and details as your supporting documents wherever applicable. Check your present address carefully because address-related information can affect document and police verification requirements.
Incorrect or incomplete information can cause problems during processing.
5. Pay the passport re-issue fee
Standard fee for adult passport renewal (re-issue) is ₹2,500 for a 36-page booklet and ₹3,500 for a 60-page booklet under normal processing. If you choose the Tatkal service, an extra ₹2,500 applies.

6. Book a PSK or POPSK appointment
After submitting the application and completing the payment, book an appointment.
You can choose an available Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK).
Appointment slots depend on the centre and available dates.
7. Visit the passport centre
Visit the selected PSK or POPSK on your appointment date.
Carry:
- Your existing passport
- Required original documents
- Copies of documents, if required
- Your application and appointment details
Officials will check your application and documents. They will also capture your biometric details.
8. Complete police verification if required
Police verification is not required in the same way for every re-issue application.Some applications may be processed without pre-police verification. Others may require it before the passport is issued.
The processing time can also vary based on whether pre-police verification is required. For eligible Tatkaal applications, police verification is done after passport issuance. However, some cases may still require pre-police verification.
9. Passport is printed and dispatched
After the application completes the required checks and processing, the new passport is issued and dispatched to the applicant’s address.

When you renew your passport, the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) officer physically cancels your old booklet by punching holes through the cover and blank pages and stamping it as “CANCELLED.” Active visa pages are left untouched.
Can I renew my passport 1.5 to 2 years before it expires, just because I want a fresh 10-year validity or need blank pages?
You can not apply for re-issue of passport if your passport has more than 1 year of validity left and there is no change in personal particulars. You can apply for passport renewal before more than 1 year only if there is valid reason for re-issue such as :
- Exhaustion of Pages
- Change in Personal Particulars (address, surname, appearance, signature)
- Damaged Passport
My passport expired 4 years ago. Will I face legal issues, fines, or complex court permissions?
