Driving a vehicle requires a valid driving license. If your driving license has expired then you need to renew it. You can apply for renewal of  driving license either online or at your local RTO. You can apply for a driving license renewal before 30 days of the expiry date. DL owners of large transport vehicles are required to complete a one day refresher  course at an approved driving school in accordance with government legislation.

For non-transport vehicles, your driver’s license will be extended for either till the age of 50 years or for five years if your age is more than 50 years. For transport vehicles, validity is increased by  three years. If your driver’s license expired more than one years ago, you will have to go through driving test again .

Online payment of Renewal of Driving Licence and driver’s license (DL)

Due to the ongoing pandemic, it is difficult to get out of the door with an RTO and make all sorts of payments. Fortunately, all services offered by RTOs are available online, including payment options. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism website has a dedicated page called Parivahan Sewa that allows licensees to pay online without risking illness in long lines. To pay driving licence renewal fees online, you need a smartphone or computer and an internet connection. Here are the steps you can take to successfully pay your fees online:

  1. Go to the Parivahan website.
  2. Select “Driver’s License Related Services” from the drop-down menu
  3. After redirecting, select the licensed state from the drop-down menu.
  4. When you are redirected to the next page, click the Charges / Payments tab.
  5. After being redirected, read the payment instructions and click Continue.
  6. On the next page, enter details such as your application number and date of birth.
  7. Select Click here to calculate charges to see more details.
  8. Select the bank or payment gateway to use for payment.
  9. Click Pay Now to complete the payment successfully.

Driver’s License Validity

Licenses obtained under a specific RTO are valid throughout India. Your driver’s license is valid for up to 20 years from the date of issue, or until your driver’s license’s 50th birthday, whichever comes first. In 2018, a total of 3,54,480 vehicles were sold in Maharashtra19. Due to the large number of vehicles in the state, the driving license renewal fee is set at 416 Indian Rupees. If a license renewal request is made after the renewal period has expired, an additional 1 Indian Rupee will be charged.

 Uttar Pradesh

Uttar Pradesh, well known as UP, is cheaper due to a large number of vehicles and drivers, followed by Maharashtra. The driver’s license renewal fee is 200 Indian Rupees.

 Tamil Nadu, Haryana, Gujarat

The driving license renewal fee for Tamil Nadu is 200 Indian Rupees. However, if an extension request is made after the 30-day grace period has expired, an additional 100 Rs will be charged and the total amount will be 300 Rs.

Karnataka

There are quite a few drivers in Karnataka, and the state license renewal fee is 250 Indian Rupees. If the application for driving licence renewal fees is made 30 days after the expiration date, an additional 50 Indian Rupees will be charged and the application is made one year after the expiration date.

Delhi

The capital of India is also the Union Territory with the largest number of drivers and vehicles. The RTO sets a driving license renewal fee of  200 Indian rupees, but if the renewal is delayed for more than a year, it will cost a high fee of 1000 rupees per year.

Rajasthan

In the desert states of India, the driving licence renewal fees is Rs. 300, and if the license renewal is delayed, it is charged at Rs. 1000 per year. The state saw car sales from 1.72.020

 Madhya Pradesh & Bihar

The State Transport Authority has set a renewal fee of Rs. 250 for applications received within 30 days of the expiration of the driver’s licence. However, the Madhya Pradesh RTO website does not have any official information about the royalty updates being delayed.

Telangana

The driving licence renewal fees in India is Rs 200. It will be 300 Indian Rupees at the end of the grace period, and if the grace period exceeds one year, it will be 1000 Indian Rupees.
