The passport renewal process in India is mainly done keeping passport validity in consideration.Passport renewal is possible before one year of the passport’s expiry date. An adult’s passport is valid for ten years. Validity of minor passport is 5 years. Passport renewal should be done before the passport’s validity period expiry date.

But along with the expiry of existing passport, there are other reasons as well for passport renewal or passport re issue.

 The following are the common reasons for passport renewal:

  1. Expired passport/Passport validity
  2. Damaged passport
  3. Name change
  4. Renewal of Short Validity Passport (SVP)
  5. Changing personal particulars (Change of signature, address, sex, parent’s name and etc)

There are two types of application schemes for passport renewal process in India :

  1. Normal passport –  Obtaining a passport takes approximately 25-30 days under normal circumstances.
  2. Tatkal passport – Obtaining a passport takes 2-4 days. In addition to the documents required for a regular passport, a tatkal passport requires a verification letter from a Gazetted officer.

How to Renew Your Passport in India?

The passport renewal application is done using the Passport India website, as part of the overall passport renewal process. Here is the step-by-step procedure to renew passport online:

  1. Visit the Passport Seva website.
  2. Register if you haven’t already logged in before.
  3. After the registration process, log in to the website.
  4. In the application home, select “Apply for fresh passport/ Re-issue of passport.” Choose Re issue of passport 
  5. You will have two options:  (1)Fill the form online or (2). Print the form, fill it, and upload it.
  6. To fill the form online, click on the link “Click here to fill the application form online” under alternative 1.
  7. A new page named “RPO selection” will be opened and Select the state and district under RPO selection.
  8. In the passport type, select the “Re-issue of Passport” option and state the reason for it.
  9. Choose whether you want the application in “tatkaal” or “normal” mode, and specify the number of pages required.
  10. Click “Next” to proceed.
  11. Fill in the accurate application details, family details, residential address, emergency contact, previous passport, and other required information.
  12. After filling in all the details, a summary of the information will be displayed. Cross-check the information for accuracy.
  13. Fill the self-declaration and then submit the form.
  14. If desired, download the application receipt.
  15. Click on “Pay and Schedule Appointment.”
  16. Choose the payment mode and click “Next.”
  17. In the schedule appointment section, verify your details and click “Next.”
  18. Enter your location and fill in the captcha code.
  19. Select the appointment date and then click “Pay and Book Appointment.”
  20. Proceed with the payment through your preferred payment option.

Documents Needed for Passport Renewal

The passport renewal process requires you to provide some additional documents along with your application form. After paying the passport renewal fees online, the next step in the passport renewal process is to schedule an appointment at a Passport Seva Kendra for photo and document verification. Passport Seva Kendra Visit for Renewal

On the day and time of the scheduled appointment, the applicant must go to the passport Seva Kendra office. There are no exceptions or exemptions to this Indian passport renewal process, which requires a physical visit to a passport Seva Kendra. Arrive at the passport Seva Kendra office at least 15 minutes early.

Originals of all passport renewal documents, as well as one photocopy of each, should be carried. While original documents are verified and returned, the passport office retains one set of photocopies of each document.

Once the passport renewal documents are verified at the Passport Seva Kendra, the local police station will conduct address verification at all addresses where the applicant has lived in the past year.
