How to transfer vehicle registration from one state to another in India

Following are the steps to transfer your vehicle from one state to another :

Steps 1: NOC from existing RTO

• Before you transfer your vehicle, clear any outstanding loan on the vehicle. If your vehicle is financed, get Form 35 (No Objection Certificate) from the financier.
• Fill up Form 28.
• Submit application for vehicle NOC along with supporting documents to the parent RTO where your vehicle is registered.
• Pay the requisite RTO fees.
• Processing of the application at the RTO.
• Issue of No Objection Certificate.

Step 2: Vehicle Re registration and Road tax payment in the New State

• Fill out the form 20 for re-registration
• Visit the RTO office in the new state
• Submit the forms and documents
• Physical inspection of vehicle at the new RTO
• Pay the re registration fees and the applicable road tax

Documents required for Vehicle Registration Transfer

Following are the documents required for vehicle RC transfer:

1. Individual to Individual Transfer (No Prior Loan)

If you are transferring a vehicle from one person to another and there is no active loan involved, following documents are required :

• Original Registration Certificate (RC)
• Two copies of Form 29
• Two copies of Form 30
• Copy of valid Insurance Certificate
• Copy of valid Pollution Under Control (PUC) Certificate
• Copy of Address Proof for the Buyer
• Affidavit signed by both the seller and buyer

2. Transfer of Vehicle That Had a Loan

Following are the documents required for RC transfer if vehicle had a loan:

• Original Registration Certificate (RC)
• Two copies of Form 29
• Two copies of Form 30
• Two copies of Form 35, duly filled and signed by the registered owner
• A certificate from the financier (Bank) confirming all dues have been cleared
• Copy of valid Insurance Certificate
• Copy of valid Pollution Under Control (PUC) Certificate
• Two copies of Residential Certificate
• Affidavit signed by both the seller and buyer

How long does it take for RC transfer

The vehicle ownership transfer process from one state to another (inter state transfer) is 2 step process and 2 RTOs. Therefore, the timeline can vary.

• For the NOC from the Original State RTO: It takes 7 to 15 days depending on the RTO
• For Re-registration in the New State RTO: After you receive the NOC, the re-registration in the new state can take 30 to 40 working days to complete the process.
