Driving licence renewal
You can apply for dl renewal either before it expires or after it has expired. You can apply for driving licence renewal after 50 years of age through Parivahan portal. The process for renewal is not completely online in all the states. Whether DL renewal process is online or not, in both scenarios you have to fill application form online.
Every driving licence has validity period. If individual drive without valid driving licence, then traffic inspector can issue challan and can also seize the vehicle.
Can I change address while driving licence renewal
Yes, you can change your address at the time of driving licence renewal. While you apply online, select the option for address change and pay the required fee.
Following are the common situations:
- Address is same: If your existing licence address is same as current address, apply at same RTO.
- Change in address
- Within city: Apply at same RTO and add present address
- Different city: If the new city comes under different RTO, you have to apply at the concerned RTO.
- To other state: You have to apply in the respective state and the RTO with existing driving license details.
Backlog process for driving licence renewal
You can renew driving licence online through parivahan portal. To apply for DL renewal online, you need to have your licence details in the digitalized data of parivahan .
As you have already reached 50 years of age, you might have an old or paper driving license, and so you may not find your details in the digital data. You can still check your existing licence details on the parivahan website. If you do not find your data in the central repository system of parivahan , you should apply for backlog entry.
For the backlog entry process, you need to visit the parent RTO from where driving licence was issued originally. After this backlog entry process, you can apply online for renewal of driving licence.
Time for driving licence renewal after 50 years of age
- You can renew driving license within one year before its validity expires.
- After expiry, there is a 30 day grace period for renewal, during this period you don’t have to pay late fine.
- If you renew after the grace period, there will be a late fine of Rs. 1000 per year for the renewal of driving licence
- After one year of expiry, you need to take driving re-test at RTO for renewal.
- You can not apply for renewal after 5 years of license expiry. You need to apply for new driving licence after 5 years.
Documents required for driving licence renewal
Following are the documents required for driving licence renewal after 50 years of age:
- Original driving licence.
- Medical certificate- Form 1A filled signed by certified medical practitioner MBBS
- Proof of present address
- Passport size photograph and signature in digital form
List of acceptable documents for proof of address
- Passport
- Voter Id
- Aadhar card with DOB
- Employment certificate
Specifications for uploading photographs and signature
- Photo should be minimum 35 mm×45 mm i.e. 420×525 pixels
- Signature should be minimum 35 mm×11mm i.e. 256×64 pixels
- File size should be between 10-20 Kb in jpg/jpeg format
Fees for the renewal of driving licence
Following are the fees required for dl renewal after 50 years of age:

Steps for renewal of driving license
Following are the steps to renew driving license after age of 50 years:
- Visit the Parivahan portal and click on the “Online Services”
- Select “Driving Licence Related Services” from the drop- down menu.
- Choose the state where you need your licence renewed.
- Once redirected to a new page, click on “Apply for DL renewal” from the listed Driving Licence related services.
- On the new screen, read all the instructions carefully about the Driving licence renewal application submission online.
- Enter all the required details.
- Upload all the required documents, digital signatures and your passport- size photograph.
- Finish the payment procedure through a preferred gateway.
When you successfully complete these steps, you will get application ID. The details of the application will be sent to your registered mobile contact via SMS. Or, you can locate the details via the acknowledgement page, which will appear on the screen after submitting the application.
Offline steps in renewal of driving licence
You may need to visit RTO for renewal after online application in few states or cities. After online submission of form and uploading documents through parivahan as above mentioned, you will have to follow the given steps:
- After online payment of fees, book appointment for RTO visit
- Visit the selected RTO and submit your application form and required documents.
- RTO will verify your application form and documents.
- After verification, you will receive your renewed driving license at your address.
Validity of driving licence after renewal
After the age of 50 years, Driving licence will be issued for years till you attain 60 years. If you renew at 55 or above years of age, the validity of driving licence will be 5 years.

- First, go to the official Parivahan Sewa website. From the top menu, select ‘Online Services.’ Then, select ‘Driving Licence Related Services.’
- Select ‘State.’

- Finally, provide your ‘Application Number,’ ‘DOB,’ ‘Captcha,’ and ‘Submit’.
