You get your passport without waiting for the police report. Even after post police verification, you have to cooperate with the police when they visit.

- Address: Police officer confirms that you live at the address mentioned in your passport application.
- Background: Police will check that you don’t have any criminal records or pending court cases.

Process of Passport Police Verification
If police verification is required for your passport application, the process works like this:
Step 1: Submit your passport application
You first submit your passport application through Passport Seva system and complete required appointment process.
Step 2: Police verification request is sent
If your application requires police verification, the relevant police authority receives the verification request. Request is handled through the system used by Passport Seva Project and police authorities.
Step 3: Police contacts you or asks you to visit
A police officer may contact you or ask you to visit the concerned police station. In some cases, an officer may visit your residential address. Process can vary by local police authority.
Step 4: Show your original documents
Keep your original documents ready. The police may check your identity and address details against the information provided in your passport application. Carry the original documents requested for your application along with copies where required.
Step 5: Address and identity details are checked
The officer may verify details such as:
- Your name
- Date of birth
- Current address
- Previous address, where relevant
- Identity details
- Other information related to your passport application
You should give same information that you provided in your passport application.
Step 6: Police report is submitted
After verification, the police authority sends the report to the Passport Seva system. Passport authority then takes further action based on the report and the other details of your application.
What happens during Passport Police Verification?
The main purpose of police verification is to check the information provided in your passport application.
The officer may ask questions about:
- Where you currently live
- How long you have lived there
- Your identity
- Your previous address
- Your family or other details relevant to the application
Answer questions clearly and provide the documents requested. If the officer asks you to visit the police station, take your original documents with you.
Do police officers visit your home for verification?
They may. Depending on the local process, a police officer may visit the address mentioned in your passport application or ask you to report to the police station. There is no single procedure followed in exactly the same way across every police station in India. Do neighbours need to be present for Passport Police Verification?
There is no universal rule that every applicant must have two neighbours sign a form during passport police verification.
The local police authority may ask for additional information or verification depending on the case.

After how many days police verification is done for passport
One of the most common questions asked is how long it takes for police verification to be completed for a passport. For normal application, passport police verification process takes about 21 to 30 days from your PSK appointment to passport dispatch.
- Application sent to police – Within 1–3 working days after PSK appointment, your file is sent to your local police station.
- Police check your details – Police officer will call you or visit your home to verify your identity and address. This step takes 7–21 days. Time varies based on your location and police workload. This is the main part of the police verification
- Police send the report – After the verification, police upload report to the passport office. This takes 1–3 days
- Passport printed and sent – If the report is “Favourable,” passport is printed and dispatched by speed post in 1–3 days.
What if police verification is delayed
If the police take too long, you can:
- Follow up with the Local police officer at your police station, or
- Raise grievance on the passport seva portal
How to Check Passport Police Verification Status
Passport police verification status tracking is very simple
- Visit the Passport Seva Kendra Portal and click on “Track Status“.
- Select your application type.
- Enter your File Number and Date of Birth.
- Click on “Track Status”.
What the status means when police verification is in progress:
- “Police Verification has been initiated.”
- “Police Verification submitted to District Police Headquarter.”
- “Police Report submitted by SP Office. Status is Favourable/Adverse.”
Once you see “Passport printing is in progress” police verification is complete and passport will be dispatched soon
What to Do If Your Verification Status is ‘Adverse’ or ‘Pending’
Now there could be different status for the procedure of passport police verification report. These are
- Clear
- Adverse
- Pending
If the status is pending
A Pending status often means your file is moving through the police department. Here’s what you can do:
- Contact the police station or visit in person with your file number.
- If your report is stuck after submission from the PS, contact the DPO for updates.
- You can raise a grievance on passport seva official portal. This alerts the RPO and creates an official record of the delay.
If the status is adverse
Adverse report means police found a problem and do not recommend issuing your passport. Reasons for adverse status are:
- Current address does not match the address in your application
- Wrong or false information in your form
- Pending minor court cases or legal issues
If the police give an adverse report, passport office will not issue your passport until the issue is fixed. Here is how to resolve adverse status:
- You will get notice from the passport office or call asking you to explain. Read it carefully and reply quickly..
- Collect documents to fix the issue.
- RPO has final authority. Attend the scheduled appointment on time. Carry original documents and clear photocopies.
- If the RPO decision is not in your favor, you can file a formal appeal via the official website to the CPO.
Documents Required for Passport Police Verification
When the police officer comes to your address then you have to show him the original documents that are necessary for the police verification of the passport. Following are the documents acceptable as address proof:
