Types of Driving Licences in India
When applying for a driving licence, you have three main types of driver’s licence to choose from.
Motorcycle Licenses
- MC 50CC: Motorcycles that have a small engine (50cc or less)
- MC EX50CC: Motorcycles with engines bigger than 50cc, and also includes cars.
- Motorcycles without gears: This includes any motorcycle or scooter that doesn’t have gears, irrespective of the size of engine.
- MCWG or M/CYCL.WG: This is for all types of motorcycles that have gears.

How To Apply For Driving Licence In India?
How to apply for driving licence in India? There are two main stages for applying license in India:
- Getting a learning license and
- Then apply for a permanent driving license.
Learning License Online Apply
- First, go to the Parivahan Portal
- Click on Drivers/ Learners License
- And then you have to choose your state from the drop down
- Click on “Application for New Learner’s License”
- Fill out the learner’s license application form
- Click “Next” to proceed further
- Visit the Road Transport Office (RTO) on the scheduled date. Carry your original documents and the fee receipt.

Driving Licence Online Apply
You will need your learning license – the one you got earlier to apply for driving licence in India.
Make sure you have your learning license for at least 30 days. On your test day, bring the vehicle type you applied for (e.g., car, scooter). The RTO examiner will assess your driving skills and ability to perform different maneuvers as per traffic rules. You have to pay the required fees before the test.

- Fill the application form. Upload documents (JPEGs/PDFs under 300KB, no spaces/special characters in filenames) and pay the fee. Note your application number

- Visit the RTO for the test with original docs & receipt. Take the driving test

Note: You can’t edit the submitted driving license form. So you have to cancel & re-apply for driving licence in case of any mistakes. You can directly cancel your driving licence application through the online portal.
Validity of Driving Licence Application
Either you go for driving licence online apply or offline, you will notice that younger people get longer validity, but it reduces as they grow older. In India, the validity period for driving licenses for private vehicles (cars, motorcycles, etc.) is initially set at 20 years.
Private Vehicle License Validity:
- Initial 20 years or till you turn 40, whichever is earlier
- After 40, valid for 10 years
- After that, renewed every 5 years
