How to apply for driving licence in India?

There are three types of driving licence.

Learner’s licence

Driver’s licence (Commercial)

Obtaining a driving licence for commercial use is kind of difficult. However,  getting a Driver’s licence (DL) for private use.

The age limit is 3 years along with driving licence for private use, which is 21 years.

Driving a commercial vehicle means taking responsibility for other individuals travelling in it.

Thus, it is necessary to carry a fitness certificate while driving a commercial vehicle.

Age limit to obtain Driving Licence

To apply for driving licence to drive, you should be above sixteen years. to drive a motorcycle with engine capacity below 55 ccs subject to the condition that the parent or guardian should furnish a declaration in the manner prescribed.

The applicant must be eighteen years and above to apply for a driving licence to drive a motor vehicle other than a transport vehicle.

A candidate twenty years and older will be eligible to apply for driving licence to drive a transport vehicle.

  8. Ration card
  9. Current Proof of Address (any one from the following):
  10. Rental agreement and electricity bill/LPG Bill

Other Requirements

  1. Duly filled application form (to get the application form for a driver’s licence, visit the nearest RTO or download it from the online portal for your state form4a)
  2. Passport size photographs
  3. Application fees:  If you are staying in other cities, as current address proof, you can present the rental agreement with one recent utility bill copy which can be a gas bill or an electricity bill.
  4. Medical Certificate is mandatory for all applicants over the age of 40 years. 
  5. A certified government doctor can issue a medical certificate by Form 1 A and 1.

Permanent Driver’s licence

The application in Form 4, for a permanent driving licence, shall be made along with the Learners’ Licence obtained for such class of vehicle.

How to apply for international driving license

International Driving Permit will be issued to an applicant who holds a valid Indian Licence and in addition, who is a resident of India.
