An Indian tax payer is entitled to income tax refund if he/she has paid more than the tax amount. The Refund Banker Scheme was introduced from 24th May 2007 and is operational for non-corporate taxpayers assessed in Ahmedabad Allahabad, Bangalore, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Cochin, Chandigarh, Delhi, Hyderabad Mumbai, Kanpur, Kolkata, Mumbai, Pune, Patna, Cochin and Trivandrum.

The Refund Banker Scheme will send your refund to State Bank of India the next day after you file your income tax return. SBI then processes the refund and directly deposits it into the bank account you specified in your income tax return.

There are two ways to receive your refund:

  1. RTGS/NECS – RTGS stands for Real time Gross Settlement and NECS stands for National Electronic Clearing System. RTGS is a payment facility provided by the banks, that enables the instant and complete electronic transfer of funds from one bank to another and from one place to another. NECS is a RBI-approved for electronic fund transfer anywhere across India. This means nsdl income tax refund will be credited directly to your bank account if the bank details like account, MICR code of the bank, communication address provided by you are correct.
  2. Cheque – If the bank details are incorrect or invalid, the income tax refund will be provided by a cheque from your bank.

You can check your refund status in the “Tax Credit Statements” in Form 26AS. You will receive your refund after the Income Tax Department processes your income tax return and sends you a notice.

Application procedure for NSDL refund status

Taxpayers can check nsdl income tax refund status 10 days after their refund has been sent by the Assessing Officer to the Refund Banker by entering their ‘PAN’ and ‘Assessment Year’. You can check your nsdl refund status at two websites: –

E-Filing website
  • Visit Income Tax Portal, Government of India Login Page
  • Log in with PAN/Aadhar/other relevant USER ID mentioned in the page.  On the next page, enter your password for the E-filling website
  • Enter the captcha shown on-screen.
  • Navigate to ‘e-File’ option and click on ‘Income Tax Returns’. Thereafter, select ‘View Filed Returns’ and ‘View Details’.
  • Your nsdl refund status will be shown with the help of following options.
  • “Refund Issued” – The refund amount, the mode of payment and the date of clearance of refund are displayed.
  • “Refund Failure” – The reason for failure to clear refund, date of communication and registered Email ID are displayed.
  • ‘Refund Kept on Hold’ – You have some outstanding demand from previous financial years.
  • ‘No Records Found’ – The IT department has not processed your income tax returns or is yet to publish your refund details.

Application procedure for refund re-issue

If your income tax refund is confirmed but you haven’t received it yet, you need to check the nsdl refund status. If you receive a message that “Refund failed”, you need to raise a nsdl refund re-issue request. To raise a request, follow these steps:

  1. Visit website
  2.  Login with your User ID, Password, DOB, and the Captcha code.
  3. Navigate to ‘My Account’ and then click on the ‘Service Request’ option.
  4. Navigate to ‘Request Category’ and then click on the ‘New Request’ option, and select ‘Refund Reissue’.
  5. The screen will display which all the acknowledgment numbers for every financial year during which you filed your Income Tax. Click on the ‘Submit’ option under the ‘Response’ category for the year you want the refund.
  6. Fill in details such as your Bank Account Number, Account Type, IFSC Code, Bank Name, and then click on ‘Submit’.
  7. The money will be refunded to your bank account within a few days.

Reasons for not receiving tax refund

The possible reasons for not receiving an income tax refund are:-

  1. Income tax Department has not processed your Income tax Returns.
  2. Your PAN card and Aadhaar card are not linked.
  3. Your bank account has not been verified yet.
  4. If you have any outstanding demands from previous financial years.
  5. The IT department thinks that you are not eligible for refund after processing your income tax returns.

If your refund status shows that it has been processed but you didn’t receive it yet. This means that there some issues with the SBI account maintained for credit of refunds. The possible reasons for failure of RTGS/NECS transfer are: –

  1. Your account is closed.
  2. Your account is on hold.
  3. The particular Account may be FD/Loan/PPF account.
  4. The particular Account may be NRI account
  5. The Account holder may have passed away.
  6. Bank Account details were incorrect
