Documents Required For Driving Licence Renewal

If your driving licence is due to expire or has already expired, you have to renew it through the RTO of which you hold your current driving license. For the renewal of driving license, it is necessary to fulfill certain requirements in terms of documents and fees. Thus, before applying, you should know about the documents required for driving licence renewal and gather them well in advance.

Renewal of Driving Licence 

Indians can apply online for Dl renewal through the Parivahan official portal. After the online application, visits to the RTO depend on the states and respective RTOs. Many states provide contactless service where the driving license renewal is completely online.

You need to upload documents online while applying, and you also need to bring them to the RTO, wherever it needs to visit. Along with the mandatory documents. You may need to provide additional documents as per the age category, class of vehicle, and any service availing along with the DL renewal.

If you have to change the address on your driving license as per your new address, you can apply for an address change during your Dl renewal. Accordingly, you need to provide documents for this new address.

How much time you have for driving licence renewal ?

1. You can renew driving license within one year before its validity expires.
2. After expiry, there is a 30-day grace period for renewal, for which you don’t have to pay a late fine.
3. If you renew after the grace period, there will be a late fine of 1000 Rs per annum for the renewal of driving licence
4. After one year of expiry, you need to take a driving re-test for renewal.
5. You can not apply for renewal after 5 years of license expiry. It needs to apply for new driving licence after 5 years.

Documents required for driving licence renewal

As we know, for the renewal of driving licence, a visit to the RTO varies according to the location. For a completely online process for DL renewal, you have to upload documents in softcopy (pdf or jpg). If you have to visit RTO following the online application for DL renewal, you need to take the documents as well while visiting RTO.

Documents required to renew driving licence:

• Original expired driving license.
• Passport-size photographs and signature in digital form
• Present proof of address
• Medical certificate- Form 1A filled  signed by a certified medical practitioner MBBS  (If you are above the age of 40 years)

List of acceptable documents for proof of address 

1. Passport
2. Voter Id
3. Aadhar card with DOB
4. Employment certificate

Specifications for uploading photographs and signature

1. Photo should be minimum 35 mm×45 mm  i.e 420×525 pixels
2. Signature should be minimum 35 mm×11mm  i.e 256×64 pixels
3. File size should be between 10-20 Kb in jpg/jpeg format

How to renew driving license online?

As you know the required documents for driving license renewal. Now, let’s talk about how to renew driving license step by step:

1. Go to the website of the Ministry of Road Transport of India.
2. Choose state of your residence
3. Select the ‘Apply for DL renewal’
4. Click Next and Enter the required details: Driving License Number and  Date of Birth
5. Once you have entered all the details, click on Proceed.

6. You will be directed to the website of your state.

7. Follow the instructions on the screen. Upload the necessary documents and pay the renewal fees.
8. Once you have paid the renewal fees, the system generates an acknowledgement receipt.
9. If the online application process completes successfully, you will see a success message on the screen. that’s it.

10. Renewed driver’s license will be sent to you by India Post or you may have to collect from RTO depends on RTO
