Address change while renewing driving licence
If your address has changed, you can update it on your driving licence when you renew it. You can choose the option address change in DL + driving licence renewal and pay the respective fees to get a new driving licence with an updated address. Following can be scenarios during address change on DL:
- Address is same: if your existing licence address is same as present address, apply at same RTO.
- Change in address
- Within city: Apply at same RTO and add present address
- Different city: if the city comes under different RTO, you have to apply at respective RTO with new present address
- To other state: You have to apply at RTO of new state with existing driving license details and change address to the new address
Backlog process for driving licence renewal
The DL renewal application process is online through Parivahan portal. That’s why it is necessary to have your licence details in Parivahan’s digital database.
If you have an old or paper driving licence, you may not find your details on parivahan portal. In such case you should apply for backlog entry of DL data at th parent RTO.
You need to visit the parent RTO for the backlog entry process. Once your licence details get digitalized, you can apply online for driving licence renewal.
How much time you have for DL renewal
- You can renew driving license within one year before its validity expires
- After expiry, there is a 30 days grace period for renewal without late fine
- If you renew after the grace period, there will be a late fine of 1000 Rs per year for the renewal of driving licence
- After one year of expiry, you need to take driving test for renewal
- You can not apply for renewal after 5 years of license expiry. You need to apply for new driving licence after 5 years

- Original expired driving license.
- Passport-size photographs and signature in digital form
- Current address proof
- Medical certificate- Form 1A filled and signed by a certified medical practitioner MBBS (If you are above the age of 40 years)

- Aadhar card with DOB
- Employment certificate
Specifications for uploading photographs and signature
- Photo should be minimum 35 mm×45 mm i.e. 420×525 pixels
- Signature should be minimum 35 mm×11mm i.e. 256×64 pixels
- File size should be between 10-20 Kb in jpg/jpeg format

- Click on ‘Apply for DL renewal’

- Check the box ‘Renewal of DL’ , then click ‘proceed’

- If you want to change then click on ‘update’. Next, fill in the captcha and submit it

- Upload the required documents required for driving licence renewal online

- After successful payment print the receipt and click next

- Receive your renewed DL on postal address
